    Bald lump on hen's chest

I have silkies and they are laying regularly now. However, I was petting one of the hens in the nest today, and felt a golfball size lump on her chest. It's kinda soft....it's also bald on her chest. The rest of her is fully feathered. Any ideas? Is this the crop? Also, I have one hen that...

What Feed do you use and Where do you get it?

I raised my babies on Dumor, but once they were redy for an adult feed I switched them to Purina Layena. They do well on it, and with only 11 silkies, 25 pounds lasts me well over a month at around 13 bucks a bag. I also get them a 50 pound bag of Purina scratch grains for 10 bucks to go along...

    Taking eggs from hen

I have silkies, and they are laying like crazy right now. However, sometimes when I go out in the evening to collect eggs, one or more of them are laying on them. I don't want them hatching eggs, or even getting broody. I have been having to reach under the hens to take the eggs. Am I going to...

    Nasty evil Roo.....

Oh heck no....this isn't a vision problem. Today I was out in the pen with them, and he came at me from the other side of it. He just saw me touching his girls! Bratty boy he is. Of course he will NEVER hit the stewpot. It make me sad when others (not from this forum) have suggested that as a...

My cousin is afraid to eat fresh eggs

I recently started eating my silkie eggs. I also had a hard time with it, as I just felt like I was betraying my hens for eating their young..... I started by hardboiling some and adding them to my lettuce salads. My stomach was actually queasy the first time! I got used to it once I realized...

    Nasty evil Roo.....

I love all my silkies, but one of my Roos is getting weird. They are all about 7-8 months old now. I know they are protective of the girls, but what's up with him launching himself at me when I reach to touch one of them? Scares the tar out of me!! I have several roos, but only 2 that seem to...

    Egg out of nest. Why?

My silkies are starting to lay, have been for the last couple months. I find eggs all over the place. In the box, outside on the ground, on the floor of the coop. It's like they just poop them out and walk away. I don't plan to have them set and hatch any, so this is fine with me. I am glad...

    much ado about VA

Yes this rain is awful the last couple days. I slide all over in the mud going to the coop. I threw down a few pounds of wood shavings in their pen today to try to keep them out of the wet mud. It helps. They are too dumb to go inside when it rains. I just went out and closed them inside the...
