Round 3 - Pullet or Cockerel

Our attempts to build a micro flock of 3 hens has been challenging - our "pullets" keep turning out to be "roos!" We hatched 15 chicks back in July and kept 2. We also got a couple of silkies of unknown sex. Shortly after they arrived, the older silkie started to crow. Oops. He went off...

Please tell me she's a pullet:-)

Thanks for the encouragement Imp:-) Based on personality alone, I would have said pullet - nothing roostery about his/her behavior at all. Not sure if this matters, but the black pullet in the pic (looks like a pullet and has a pale comb) picked on this one in the beginning. Doesn't hurt to...

Please tell me she's a pullet:-)

I was afraid that would be the case:( I kept two of the 15 chicks we hatched and this one was the quietest, most laid back one of them all- was sure it would be a hen -- till those tail feathers started coming in. He'll have to be exchanged:( No roos allowed. Too bad- he was my favorite...

Why doesnt everyone use a water bottle for their chicks?

Very cute! It didn't take long for me to switch to a rabbit bottle after I saw what a mess the chickies made with the quail waterer. LOVE it!!!

    Chick looks like a porcupine

Thx Liz! Does anyone know why this might be happening? Do I just have a lazy chick?

    Chick looks like a porcupine

Is it normal for a chick NOT to remove the wax off its feathers? My runty chick has feathers growing but is leaving the waxy coating on them - it looks like a porcupine! Other behaviors are normal - it's eating/drinking/acting fine. All my other chicks are feathering out fine and keeping...

    Chicks' tail feathers are GONE!

Thanks Cent - anything I should be looking for nutritional-wise - the starter came from TSC - Dumor is the brand. Recommendations for density - I have a third dog crate. Maybe I should divide up the flock? Thanks Sylv - as I said before, they are a rowdy bunch and my roosters may certainly...

    Chicks' tail feathers are GONE!

You're absolutely right - ultimately, there will be no roos for us. Just a few hens . Well, the Blue Kote has been applied (on the chicks, my hands and my sink ) - the injured chicks are in isolation - and the remaining chicks are hanging out acting innocent. All's quiet for now. No more...

    Chicks' tail feathers are GONE!

The funny thing is, the one that's the worst off I suspect to be a roo-to-be, hmmm, maybe I was wrong

    Chicks' tail feathers are GONE!

Thanks Sylv - I have already treated with the Neosporin. Interesting about the discipline idea - might be an idea:)
