Looking for Winter Advice- What do you wish you had known

Last winter my rooster got his waddles hurt from the metal water fountain that froze on the outside metal wall. I couldn't understand where the blood was coming from until I saw him, poor guy. Boy did I feel bad. I'm getting a heater base for my 2 gal metal water fountain this year. Jane

Looking for Winter Advice- What do you wish you had known

Those all in one water fountains for $50.00, I bought one and it's a waste of money!!! Glad I tried it BEFORE winter hit. After I fill it up, the bottom of the unit won't secure to the water part. The water part is made of flimsy plastic and if you THINK it's on and turn it over, you get a real...

    Pecking & Saddles getting wet?

I think you have a good question. I'm not an expert by any means but... there are natural oils on the feathers. Since the saddle sits on top and may get wet, I would think the feathers under it would repel the water before it got to the skin. My chickens won't stand outside in the rain if they...

Best way to feed chickens without all the waste?

I'm sick of all the waste of high priced feed that my one month olds and older chickens are making. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of home made feeders that help keep the waste down?

how long should a broody set on her eggs?

My broody silkie is on day 22. I have one chick from yesterday, doing fine. So my question is: how long should I give the other 4 eggs before tossing them?

    Infected face

I have a silkie hen, 2 years old with an infection on one side of her face. There is yellow puss? coming out of her eye. She is setting on eggs and I've been giving her Terramycine powder in her water but since she is setting, I'm not sure she is getting enough to help. I'd like to give her...

    warty feet

Tomorrow I'll try to get a picture. The legs look "flaky" not like it is described as leg mites. Since I'm having problems with some picking feathers from others, could this hen be the victim of toe picking? I know...pictures are coming thanks

    warty feet

I have 19 chickens and only one has this problem. Her legs seem swollen and flaky looking and her feet look bumpy like witch's fingers. Maybe warty looking. It's hard to discribe but she roosts a lot and it takes her some time to jump off to eat. I'm think it might be painful for her. Any...

Removing rooster spurs with a hot potato...

I have done the hot potato way and would NEVER do that again! It burnt my poor roo's legs. The hot potato just softened the spur and we still had to twist it off and it bled real badly. I used quik stop on him and it took a long time before I could get the bleeding stopped.

Teaching grown chickens to be less skittish of us?

Yes, spending time with your flock can turn them into pets, BUT some of my chickens had learned if they pecked at my foot or leg I'd pick them up.(I thought it was cute) They started to like that and now I have chickens who peck HARD if I don't give them attention. I think I liked it better when...

    Infectious Bronchitis

The only reason I thought it was IB is a cough or sneeze once in a great while, and sometimes an egg has a rough shell. I've slept on my decision and have decided to wait and see. They are just my backyard flock. Not going to any shows etc. and I try to be as bio-secure as possible. Thanks for...

    Infectious Bronchitis

Well, if it were only that easy... they don't look sick, they are laying real well considering the bitter temps here in Michigan, one will cough or sneeze once in a great while. Then I have to ask, since they are doing great laying, all the expense so far into them. Will I really regret culling...

    Infectious Bronchitis

I think my whole flock has Infectious Bronchitis. Is there a treatment for this or do I have to cull my whole flock and start all over?

    Using peepers (blinders) the reason?

Then if I use peepers on my two roosters, they can live together in the same coop? Is this cruel? How long can peepers stay on? Sorry for all the questions, I think this may be my answer to keeping my whole flock together in one coop. Jane

    Using peepers (blinders) the reason?

I'm wondering if using peepers on my two roosters, they can coexist together in the same coop without killing eachother? What are the reasons for using blinders? Will blinders help keep feather picking at bay? Jane

    Double walle fountain problem

If you live where it gets freezing, be carefull. My poor rooster got his waddle stuck to the frozen double walled water fountain and when I noticed the problem, there was blood all over. He's ok now, but his waddle has a big black splotch where it got stuck. I'm not using metal anymore in the...

Is a dust box needed in the winter?

I'm going to put a car tire in my coop. Put sand and wood ash and a little DE mixed together. I use tires, placing a rubber feeder in them for feeders and put my water fountain on top of the other. This helps keep the pine shavings out and when it's really cold, I just use the rubber feeder for...

Heated water bowls and extension cords

I think I'm going to try the manure method. Now that I think about it...in the winter here in Michigan, it wouldn't smell much plus with it being contained in rubber and heavy plastic...that's got to keep down the smell. I just like the idea of free tires/free manure=free heat. Jane

Heated water bowls and extension cords

Someone from another chicken group suggested using an old car tire. Getting fresh horse manure and packing it into the middle of the tire. Cover the manure with plastic and insert a galvanized feeder pan ontop, then put your chicken waterer inside the pan. The horse manure will start to...
