Placing a big mirror on top of the coop may help deter the hawk

    Sour Crop/ vet

So I noticed my barred rock throw up 2 days ago , and she appears to have sour crop. I brought her to the vet right away, and the vet suctioned out some of the crop, and prescribed nystatin. I've been giving her 2 doses of the nystatin, and also probiotics. I am on day 3, she us still very...

As I watch my chickens come out

When I first got mine, i kept them in a nice little run, but then they would jump on top of the coop, then hop over the fence... I finally just gave in and now they have access to my whole backyard.

As I watch my chickens come out

Every morning, cooing and squawking happily, I find myself wondering what goes through their minds. Is every morning like a brand new experience? Are they thrilled when it is nice out, as opposed to the cold weather we had yesterday. Do they remember how crappy it's been thus winter? Are they...

Auto doors, chicken curfews and vacations

Definitely get the automatic door. I got mine from chickendoors.com. It works excellent, and they are great to deal with . Believe me , it comes in handy. When you go away , you don't need to have someone come over first thing in morning, and then back at night. It us the best purchase I've...

    Pullet Shut Automatic Door

I just wanted to give these guys a shout on on these message boards. I had bought my door about a year ago. I am one of the most unhandy people out there, but it was very easy to install. It was great to be able to go away for a few days and not have to have people come over early in the...

What is coming out of my chicken? *Gross pictures, not to graphic though*

Looks like egg. You could try filling your bath tub with warm water, just high enough to cover the chickens butt. Keep her in the water until the water starts cooling. This may loosen it up, ty to pull it out very gently in the water.

Adult hen with coccidosis and intestinal parasite

My vet informed me that my barred rock has coccidosis and intestinal parasite. She deals mostly with dogs/cats, but is the only vet around that will look at chickens. She said it was up to me wether or not I wanted to medicate, but that since its an adult, it most likely will not kill the...

Automatic Coop Door Opener: Your Experiences Please!

I use the pullet shut, and it is well worth it. Very easy to install, and I have had no problems with it. I use the photo sensor, so it opens and closes based on the light, not on a timer. I cant say enough good things about it, Im going away for a few days, and I dont have to worry about...

    Hawks!!!! What to do

You can try giving them places to hide. After I lost one, I hung up cds, and put up a fake owl. I also put netting up in two parts of my backyard. I also kept them confined to the run for week. The hawk still flies by on occasion, but, knock on wood, hasnt taken anymore. Nothing is really...

thought it was crop, but she may be eggbound

So 4 or 5 days ago, my RIR was fluffing her feathers and being lethargic. I thought it was an impacted crop, but I believe she may be egg bound. Their was some white almost intenstine looking thing on her butt. I bathed her in warm water twice, and a piece of it came out. Their is still a...
