I got this lady a couple years ago as part of a trio that I rescued from a family whose landlord suddenly changed their opinion of backyard chickens. They didn't know the breeds or ages of any of the hens but said they laid regularly. The other two were white leghorns who laid regular but loved...
I have a bonded trio of Speckled Sussexes that are less than a year old. One rooster, one hen, and one we aren't sure about yet. I'd prefer to trade locally for similar aged laying hens, but I'm open to other offers. They're super friendly and love to roam the yard together, and they really do...
Ok, so I am feeling the shame of buying store-bought eggs when I have two perfectly healthy (seeming) egg-laying hens.
I have 4 chickens: a year old giant Blue Cochin hen, an almost year old Silver-laced Wyandotte hen, a 3.5 month old Americauna pullet and a 3 month old Red Sex Link pullet. Up...
So, I had two cochin hens a little over a week ago. One was broody, or so I thought. Then, we found her dead in her nest box. While I figured out what to do, too much time elapsed for my to get her in for a necropsy. We are guessing she was egg-bound.
Then I got a 5 month old Wyandotte hen...
I have two giant cochin hens and I've been keeping careful track of how many eggs I get each day. The first week they were laying, I got maybe one a day on average. Then it quickly moved to two a day. Now they each have their own nest and I was getting used to finding one egg in each nest every...
Pick up unless otherwise negotiated. I live in the South Bay Area in San Jose. Make an offer.
I have a beautiful 4 month old Barred Rock rooster. He was from my first hatch, eggs bought here on BYC. I've invested a lot of time and love into this guy, but I can't keep him in city limits...
I have a chick I am very attached to. It is a barred rock, my only hatch, who loves to sit and talk with me. I live in suburbia though and can only have hens. So here's some pics...

I'm so happy, DH finally finished our coop and the chicks have moved in. Next we have to build a run, but for now they are happily not living in the house!
DH has posted his pics of the completed coop here.
Next stage is painting it, then building the run.
I have a tiny chick bator with three eggs inside. One has hatched just now, another with cracks, but the middle egg nothing so far. Well, the hatched chick is kicking everyone else around and flailing to get out. What do I do? Do I take her out? Or will they all be ok with her making such a fuss...
So, I have the "Chick-Bator", a cheap 3-egg incubator that I bought for $25 at a local feed store. In it I now have 3 BR eggs I got from someone here on BYC. It surprised me that they all arrived through the mail intact.
So now I've been offered a couple EE eggs from someone local. They won't...
I keep seeing suggestions to buy this at WalMart for about $7. My family doesn't shop at WalMart, is there anywhere else I could buy one for about this price? We checked a local pet store and found one for a terrarium but it doesn't have a probe and won't fit in my incubator.
