    Show Breeds

I am sure a lot of people ask this question, but what are some good show breeds? I live in Maryland so they need to be semi-hardy, and very friendly. They will have a big coop and a big run. Some of you may suggest Barred Rock, but I have had absolutely no success in making them friendly. I am...

Bradford Pear Tree Blossoms Okay to Eat?

I have those trees too and my hens also love to eat the petals. Doesn't seem to bother my hens either; and I haven't heard of Bradford Pear trees ever being harmful. But why would you gather them? Why not just let your chickens eat them when they please?

    New to Showing!

I have been raising free range egg layers for the past 10 years but I recently decided to switch to a show flock in the spring. I am planning to get about 8 hens ( would they have a lot of issues without a roster? ). I am wondering which breeds are the most docile and trainable. I have always...

What is wrong with my flock...please help!

That's terrible! I'm not the most knowlagable on cocci but I have a prediction on the part about them not laying as much but acting healthy. Usually when chickens do that it means something scared them. and when this scarcity of eggs is always happening, it means the thing that is scaring them...

    Thinking about getting a Roo

In my excperiance, roos wait until they are maybe around 3-3 1/2 months old. But I can not answer your mixing question because I have never raised Leghorns. I'm guessing the chicks egg color will be either BuffO color or Leghorn color, whichever the chicks get thier traits from. But that's just...

I have a free-range 10 month old Golden Laced Wyndotte and I want to show her in the Frederick Fair. I have never shown any of my birds and I'm clueless on how to prepare. I have done some reading and I know she has to be vaccinated and I do not know about any of the diseases the people were...

    Roosters Crowing

The ratio for hens to roosters is 1 roo for every 7-8 hens. I hope you didn't get atteched to them yet because the only solution i have is to go to freecycle.com and and give away some of the boys :( you won't have any luck selling them for money because unfortunatly a lot of people don't like...

    Corn on the cob

I always husk my corn before giving it to my girls. I don't know if they can eat husks but I wouldn't try it because they may get sour crop because the husks are very tough. So I wouldn't suggest giving them the husk

dog killed 15 hens and one is left with dog 2 dog bites. I have baytril. but not sure what to use.

I am so sad. :( If I were you I would not want to put her down at all. Ask your vet if she is in pain. If she is not just keep her. Spend alot of time with her before she goes. If she is in pain, I hate to say this but I think it would be best for her to put her out of her misery. Once again, I...

I have had that experiance before. I do not know how open your chicken's wounds are but my hen's were gaping. I put hydrogen pyroxide and A+D on the bites right away to stop infection and she recovered. And make sure you iscolate her
