I am also looking for a show quality breeder ..for bantam buffs. we are in the process of trying to become a show quality breeder...we have one young cock and one young hen, and two month old pullets that are the chicks of the older pair. I wouold really like to add another rooster, and a couple...
I'm a horse person too:-) new to chickens...,.SO not new to horses!
Currently, my two daughters and I have:
Finnegan's Wake (aka Finn) - an 18 year old black/bay OTTB, trained up to 3rd level dressage, ex-showjumper, but has mostly been a 4-H show horse for the past couple of years.
Aces &...
from my experience as a 4-H dog project leader for many years...
for trainability - they don't get much better than Shelties. They are like little computers.
grooming...VERY time consuming. but they are beautiful and if you live in colder climates, they do very well.

Hi!
I have been on BYC for a few weeks now, but only just thought to look for a desert chickens thread...so many folks seemed to be back east, some of their processed and eneds didn't match ours here in AZ.
So, we are in Queen Creek, and we have ...a bunch of chickens. i lost count;-) I think we...
what should I look for in 3 week old chicks to tell if male or female? is it possible? I have 2 buff orpingtons purchased straight run...hoping for either a pair or two hens....my luck, they'll both be roos.
I just noticed today one of my hens also had black poop. watery and black, then another had basically clear....just water come out.
I clicked on that link and it was a thread for scaly leg mites? I didn't see a "poop chart" :-)

We just got a pair of 6 month old Bantan Buff Brahmas...they are the sweetest birds ever! hadn't been handled a lot before today and the roo was being handled like he was ready for a showmanship class in an hour. The hen a little more timid, but still very accepting of attention and tolerant...
ok here goes...yes - my 10 year old DID name most of them:-)
Roos -
1 Black Copper Marans - Magnus
1 Barred Rock - Cookie (he used to have a mate named Oreo, but she didn't make it through summer)
Hens -
2 bantam white frizzles - Snowflake & Blizzard
2 Easter Eggers - Lucky and Silly

I have an Irish Wolfhound, 2 Springer Spaniels and a cocker spaniel... 3 bird dogs by breed on the property. Granted, my hens are in a fenced yard away from the dogs, but they can and do get out. my female springer has been known to kill chickens in the past, although I think she *scared* them...
one of my easter egger hens was attacked by a dog several weeks back. Her whole rear end was bloody and chewed off. I could see bones, and pools of blood. I figured she was a goner, but she made it back into the yard from wherever she'd gone, and was walking around. So I figured she deserved a...
ok, so its really hot here in the summer, so my chickens' "coop" is a big dog run with a roof. It has roosting areas inside it. And they hate it. there is a nice low tree in the run/yard and that is where nearly all of them sleep.
So, my question is, I've noticed that egg production is very...
My daughter is also getting started with her first poultry project in 4-H. She will probably end up showing the little Yokohama hen someone gave us in showmanship, but we're still lookin...
Leisa
thanks:-) we're kind of stuck between cochins, speckled sussex and orpingtons.there are a ton of people out here breeding Polish and Silkies so, as cute as they are, we're going to stay away from them. But there's so many beautiful birds out there to choose from!

My daughter and I are just getting started...we have had a small flock of hens for about 6 months, and managed to keep them alive through the hot, hot summer here in the desert.
So, she would like to start planning for her first county fair in the spring, both for showmanship and breed class...
We are fairly new to chickens, mostly we have egg layers now, but are thinking about getting a couple of show quality for the kids and myself. we know very little about showing chickens, but are excited to learn so we can decide fairly soon what breed(s) we want to get.
Other than our small...
