My chickens don't mind the rain to much in summer, but they don't like to get wet and cold together. I like to keep them dry especially in winter since I don't use heat lamps in my chicken house. They can take the cold but not the wetness.
I spread a bale i of straw across the top of garden this winter in ky and my chickens just love it. It keeps their feet from standing on the cold hard ground plus I throw a little hay and a few sunflower seeds on top and it keeps them busy all day digging pecking
