Thanks. I have checked inside her vent for an egg. Felt nothing..shes always had difficulty laying. Weird shaped eggs and shell-less eggs sometimes. I hope she is not suffering.
So, for over a week now, my RIR hen has been walking with a penguin walk. I thought maybe she was egg bound, so we've been doing warm soaks once or twice a day and oral calcium. I even squirted some lube in her vent once.
She seems in good spirits. Still eating, but she's having more and more...
So, my production red had a really rough start to egg laying. But, now that she seems to have it mostly figured out, I've noticed her eggs are always cracked/broken in the exact same spot.
At first, I thought the were breaking on the way out, so I added extra padding to the nesting box. Then...
I'm not exactly sure how old she is, as I bought her as a pullet. Probably about 5 months. I have 2 other hens same age, but not laying yet. No extra light. But, living in colorado we get a ton of winter sunshine and most of my hens do lay all winter.
I guess i will wait her out a few more...
My production red started laying last week. So far, most of the eggs have been covered in a thin layer of blood and some mucus. She's layed small eggs, misshapen eggs, a shell-less egg, No regular eggs yet.
Is this to be expected? I've never seen issues like this before. My other previous...
I'm starting to think the white is a leghorn too. It really reminds me of my ancona, and since both are mediterranean breeds, I guess that makes sense. I hope she lays better than the ancona, though.
I agree it is definitely not ameraucana.
I'm anxious for the blue to get older and...
Okay, probably a hatchery rhode island red (aka production red).
The lady i got these from thought the white was an ameraucana. I don't think so. I asked if it could be leghorn and she said no. Who knows? Will have to waIt and see as it gets older maybe. It is hard to say what color the...
Hmm....I think it probably is a single comb. I just went out to check. It's just starting to come in. Guess it wouldn't be a sumatra then.
I'll try to get some better pictures in the daylight tomorrow.
Just got these 3 pullets today. I'm pretty sure the one is a rhode island red.
Any guesses on the other 2? The white one is a little skiddish. Reminds me a lot of an Ancona I used to have. I thought the other might be a blue sumatra?
You can click on pics to see them bigger.
Thanks for you...
A friend of mine has only one chicken (how sad!) and he said I can have it. She is about a year (not laying). I currently have two hens, both under 1 year (but laying). Do you think it is wise to take this bird or should I get chicks instead? Also, not sure if it makes much difference, but I...
Yes, mine get noisy when they see me, too. I don't mind that. For the most part they are quiet during the day, but they start making a ton of noise when the sun comes up.
If they were barking dogs, I'd just make them stay inside....but, can't really do that with chickens :)
We have had them 2 weeks. They were quieter when we first got them. They do have a coop and run for them, but there are no lightsi in it. I think they might just want to be let out.
I got 2 hens off criagslist (barred rock and ancona) and they are my first venture into owning chickens in the 'burbs. My husband took about a year to convince. Now, they are making tons of noise and waking him inthe mornings. The ancona is super loud. It is not because they are laying at...
Just got 2 hens yesterday. We bought them and a coop off craigslist. They are super fun and i am already dreaming of coop upgrades! Our girls aren't super friendly, but still very sweet. The kids are loving them and I can already see why everyone says chickens are addicting.
We might get...
Hi,
I know this post is older, but I wanted to say hello. We are also in HR and just getting started with our chickens. Such fun. What coop design did you end up going with?
