I did a very shallow exam, not going in deep, but instead, I palpated the abdomen extensively. I am not very well versed in chicken conditions, but i do know bird anatomy since i hunt and clean my own birds (pheasants).
My main confusion is that this hen never laid one egg, and the eggs...
The night before she seemed fine as all the others, but she may have been making an odd noise while on the roost with the others (could have been someone else). No prior signs of illness.
Also the eggs which were in her had no shells.
I went out this morning and found one of my maran hens huddled and not moving. I went over to her and palpated her stomach and found it to be stiff and chunky...
I washed off her back side because i thought she was having trouble passing feces, but then realized her vent was clear and free of...
Same Here.
I have built a broody box in my shed and set the broody hens in there with a clutch. When the chicks get big enough i set them in the run or outside with the rest of the flock (about a week or two). Here are some pictures with two of my Maran hens sitting.
You can...
I use prairie hay, it is easy to work with a pitch fork, and the chickens eat it some times! It does let poop go through it easy, so a thick layering is needed if you want to keep the poop off the coop floor.
Just as a follow up:
Out of the 6 eggs of this clutch hatched,
One leghorn died the day after hatching which i think was a result of having them in with the rest of the flock (got trampled mabey?)
The Cochin Baby died of exposure. It got out of the run thru some chain link and tried to get...
Hey all, I got onto this hatch a bit late. Looks like some exciting stuff! I am always appreciative of those who have good media skills and upload videos and pictures of all the crazy steps of a chick's life. I am more of a in-the-moment guy and always forget to document occasions.
I have two...
I moved the hen off myself to take the pictures. She is a great sitter, and very friendly to me and my wife when we come in to check on her or the chicks. She did growl at our cat when he walked by though... Good momma!
I would recommend Cochin for backyard. My bantam Cochins are amazing.
For eggs I would find a non-typical leghorn like my barred Leghorns, they are fun to look at and produce and egg a day, I have 5 more on their way under my bantam cochins. They are hatching TONIGHT!
If you are looking for...
I candled the eggs while in "Lock Down". This may be a no-no, but i figure my broody hen leaves the nest once a day while in this period so no problem. While incubating I am unsure of the ill effects, but can only assume that it may take an incubator longer to bounce back from an exposure than a...
We have had a few dogs on our small farm that we tried to have protect our animals and have had mixed results.
-Our German Shepherd / Catahoula Leopard dog mix was a rescue. She was pretty skittish all around, and at first acted like she was not interested in the birds until we turned our back...
ah, I see. I am yet again enlightened by BYC. Thanks for your info I will read up on it.
I am hatching these little guys under a broody hen, so hopefully she and the eggs didn't mind it to much?
