I use prairie hay, it is easy to work with a pitch fork, and the chickens eat it some times! It does let poop go through it easy, so a thick layering is needed if you want to keep the poop off the coop floor.

I moved the hen off myself to take the pictures. She is a great sitter, and very friendly to me and my wife when we come in to check on her or the chicks. She did growl at our cat when he walked by though... Good momma!
