I've tried both ways. There's pros and cons to both. My first broody, I immediately took her out and moved her to the brooder we had just built. Let her set on 8 eggs and she laid 3 more while being in there before she strictly SET. She hatched them all out just fine. The con with this method...
Im no incubator pro. My hens are always going broody, they hatch them and we've only had one expire at 15days of incubation. Otherwise the hatch rate is amazing. I will always go with a broody as long as I have one when I need chicks
Sanding eggs? That's wrong on so many levels! My broody marans just hatched 5 of her own. All made it out fine. Obviously it's not that they cant get out or the egg shell is to blame. Maybe it's something to do with incubators/settings if only some people have problems with them?
Can I just say, I ordered Golden Duckwing Phoenix from there only because my daughter thought they looked cool and would be something different in 4H. We didn't get 15 golden. They sent us a variety and when I told them about the mix up...NO RESPONSE! Never going back. But now that we've fallen...
I'm sure cleaning it first would be the best way to go about it. I did think about one of the plastic easter eggs we had around the house but quickly realized there's little holes in the ones we had and it wouldn't hold the moisture in like I was trying to do.
Thanks!! .....and I would definately be willing to help others through it. I think the key is patience and in my case keeping that bottom end moist and covered.
**UPDATE** Last night It took me about 30minutes to get him out, I was very careful chipping away. slowly made the pip hole larger and peeled back the top membrane and actually just stretched the inner membrane until he could get out. He was actually quite LARGE compared to the others
I...
Thank you so much for the reply and links for me to read up on while I wait. I went ahead and checked the rear end of the egg once more since all of a sudden hes peeping extremely loud and wiggling big time. He has managed to poke a portion of his leg through the tiny slit in the membrane...
My broody hen has multiple eggs shes hatching. Last night made it day 23. 4 have hatched out fine, broody hen likes to break them open once they pip for some reason. Otherwise she takes GREAT care of them once they are out. I guess shes impatient. Now, Last night about 9pm I noticed she was...
When you "pulled" the poop off, did you literally just PULL it off? You should always wet, wipe, wet, wipe and it will start to come off very easily without hurting the chick. Hope the little one makes it.
Thank you, thank you, thank so much! :D I was wanting to hatch eggs this spring but I didn't know about my golden in question, I was going to take him out of the making babies equation. But, since you've cleared up the fact that he's just a light..I should put him with my silver hens and not my...
Yes they are. I hadn't been able to find much in depth info on Phoenix. They are right at 9mo now, is this normal or should they be looking different? I know they have been the slowest chickens to mature.
Well here's mine. I know their tails need work. I think my hens are super pretty. Sweetest chickens I have. They just started laying. All are 9mo old.
Above is my Golden..hes actually darker in person. Not sure if his coloring is right.
My silver ( I adore this guy ).... he's absolutely...
