    What breed is this?

Really! What characteristics make you think it's a cockerel? I was told it was a she.

    What breed is this?

Hi everyone, I haven't been on BC in ages. I bought a fully grown hen today from a local feed store. The guys there have no idea what breed it is. I am hoping some of you can help. I don't know the egg color as she hasn't laid. She is big but is underweight so I don't expect eggs for...

Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

Thank you Wappoke. My broody hen now has her chicks for about a week. She turns out to be an aggressive and protective mother. When the cats come near, she charges at them and chases them away.

I know the owner of the Yahoo group named SOCALPOULTRY raises ducks and sells ducklings. He might be able to give you some info. Join that group and you can communicate with him. I think his name is Kevin. Good luck.

The pattern is a bit patchy, but I don't see any red coming through, so I am leaning toward girl on this one. Please post back when you know for sure.

Hooray! I always want to know if my guesses hit the mark. Is that the picture of #2? As for the olive green egg, you know how they say, if there is no picture, it didn't happen.

The only sure girl is #1. The other ones look like boys due to dark red wing patches.

HI orginalcookie. I personally have never used wheat flour. I use wheat bran as the main substrate. It's light and airy and the beetles can bury themselves and still breathe. Also, they like it dark, so I always put at least one layer of newspaper on top of the food. This serves two purposes. It...

Hahaha. You're right, except Corona is already jogging distance from me. I'll see. If the weather is nice, I may take the kids there for the day.

Sounds like a fun event but too far from me. Just wondering if there will be one near Corona or Norco. Thanks.

I also have very bad luck with feed store chicks. 3 out of 5 chicks turn out to be boys and they were supposed to be girls.

I think you got yourself a boy here. Not only the comb is 3 row, it's too red and too big for 4 week old girl chicks.

You definitely gave away a boy. 3 row comb + dark red on wings = boy. As for 3 row comb females, I only recall one or two that I saw in this whole lengthy thread. Also, the chicken that abserbean posted right above your post has 3 rows, and I believe it is a girl, not 100% sure though. It...

Most EE boys have 3 row combs, but not always. My EE boy has a single row comb which never grew out to be 3 rows even when he became a big rooster.

This one is 100% pullet. Even pattern, no dark patches on wings, slender legs, pale comb, female posture, and it looks exactly like one of my girls.

This one is a hard one. It has the body of a hen but the rooster's comb. Usually, most cockerels by 8 weeks would have some dark patches on their wings already. This one seems to have even pattern without dark patches. So, I am going to vote hen. Please update once you know for sure. I am...

    Sexing Barred Rocks

Help please! This is my first and only barred rock chick. It's 8 weeks old today. The legs seem thick and color not as dark as most girls I've seen in this forum, so I am not sure. This chick is raised by a broody hen and is slow growing compared to chicks I raised in the brooder. So, I am not...
