Hi guys! I am a first time chicken momma for about a month now, and boy do I love my little munchkins! Although I swear nothing can prepare you for how much these little monsters eat! I told my husband that we must have bought small feathered piglets instead of chicks, and they are now...
Ah it looks awesome! I bet you're super excited to get your chicks now! Forgive me for also drooling over the mountain in the background..... It's so flat where we are. I miss mountains :)
I hear ya! My mom has been helping with my garden and has to head back to England tomorrow where it's forecast snow. She won't get to plant her own garden for a while yet!
Today's bargain was a trailer full of mulch for $20! I had more than enough to do my garden and round my big old oak tree. Next project is the coop! Thanks for the book suggestion moonshadows, I bought the chicken whisperers guide which I quite like, but you can never have too many books! An...
Sand is the bees-knees for odor control! We have 13 ton delivered twice a year for our dogs. It all gets dumped in a huge pile under a shady tree and over the course of 6 months they make it a flat mound. It stays cool in the shade for them and pulls all their doggy odors off their fur. We have...
Cheers! On the veg 'houses', the sides are permanent, but the front and back can be opened completely. There is a piece of cane at the bottom on the opening sides that tucks under a screw for security, but un-tucked, you can peel back the whole side up to the peak of the roof shape for access...
Looking great rugz! On a separate note I love your wood edging on the left of the bottom pic! We have put the coop on hold while my folks have been visiting from England, and instead working on the garden which is all planted up now thanks to my super mom! Here's a few pics....
My helper...
What you're suggesting is similar to what I'm planning to do. I think it's the best way to cope with the heat. Also you might consider a sand floor in the 'coop' as it will stay cool where shaded and you don't have to battle the heat and humidity rotting shavings down too quick. Hope this helps!
We're trying our best to get it all done but the other half is working a lot plus we had a boatload of rain this past week. I'll get out there and take some pics this weekend if the sun comes out, aart! Happy constructing, rugz! I'll check that site out, thanks!
Wow rugznjones, it looks great! I love that all your material is recycled, very green! Are you getting chicks or grown birds? It sure looked exciting to see the shed being delivered! Where about are you?
It breaks my heart to read this. My animals are like children to me and it pains me to hear about such a tragedy, I cannot even imagine how hard it must be for you. That you are encouraging people towards checking their own coops and barns for fire safety in light of your own loss makes you an...
I'm pretty sure they would climb it. They love to roost in high places. Just make sure you're not making it difficult for yourself to clean and maintain etc. The landings sound like a cool idea too!
Thanks! I think we're going to set the bottom of the wire into concrete in the ground... not so much for the dogs sake, but we have racoons also which I'm a little concerned about.
So here's the plan...
We are planning to have 4 chickens, so I'm thinking this will be enough space for them for now... This 'compound' for lack of a better word, sits in the middle of our 2 acre yard, so we can always add more run space in the future....
The whole thing has a fence around...
Over the past several years I have collected quite a collection of self-sufficiency books, and love the idea of it all. After buying Mels Square Foot Gardening book last fall we were convinced to give it all a go. So we saved up our money over Christmas and are in the process of building a...
