Growing grain for chicken feed in the Pacific Northwest - Advice Needed!

So I've got a lot of birds and they eat a ton and it's getting expensive. We've got some land so it occurred to me that perhaps I should grow a small field of grain to supplement the store bought stuff. I've been doing some research online but am having a hard time finding the exact info I'm...

At what age do Tom turkeys become aggressive?

So I've browsed through a lot of posts on how aggressive Tom turkeys can be, but I was wondering, at what age do they typically start to display aggressive behavior towards people? I guess what I really want to know is "Am I Safe?" LOL. My heritage bronze tom is about 1 year old. We are in...

When do Black-Shoulder males start growing in their darker plumage?

Thank you. :-) Yes, all hens I guess... poor me, right? Also had a spalding but he died mysteriously when he was a couple months old. I thought it was a "he" because "he" displayed a lot even as a chick... but maybe this is a misconception? I've seen the girls do it too but not often...

When do Black-Shoulder males start growing in their darker plumage?

Oh wow... yeah, mine don't look anything like that link. One has a couple tiny glints of green on a few neck feathers but that's it. At this point I'm thinking all 4 of the peachicks I purchased are female! I'll take some photos.

When do Black-Shoulder males start growing in their darker plumage?

I have two black-shoulder peafowl. They are about 9 months old. Both are mostly white with gray and brown mottling on their backs and necks. Does this mean they are both female, or does it take longer for the males to start growing in their darker adult plumage pattern? Thanks!

Please help - peachick suddenly very ill (photo)

Thanks everyone for your responses and help, I started medicating for cocci immediately but she continued to worsen and died shortly thereafter. By the time she died, her abdomen was green in color. All the others are still 110% fine. Was wondering if possibly she had some sort of internal...

Please help - peachick suddenly very ill (photo)

Thanks so much for all your responses and suggestions. Sounds like coccidiosis is a major suspect - one question though, they are on feed that is already medicated for coccidiosis prevention - is it still possible for them to get it? I have had coccidiosis in chicken chicks before (who were...

Please help - peachick suddenly very ill (photo)

All my peachicks were healthy and active yesterday, but this morning one was lying in a corner. It's vent and abdomen are distended, feces are watery with a little blood, and it clearly does not feel well (doesn't want to move, not interested in food or water). I feed them medicated chick food...

    ID my peachicks please?

Do Spauldings always inherit the Green-type crest or do some have normal crests?

    ID my peachicks please?

OMG he is so gorgeous! I guess it's all in how you raise them. Several people told me not to get peafowl because "they're wild animals / you can't tame them / they're crazy / etc" but mine are just as tame and friendly as chickens... at least so far. LOL.

    ID my peachicks please?

Oooh! Spaldings are Java Green hybrids, right? Aren't Greens supposed to be kinda high strung? That one is by far the tamest and most affectionate.

    ID my peachicks please?

Thank you very much! I appreciate your efforts.... When I know what they are for certain I'll try to dig up the thread and update. :-) If it helps, these birds were ordered from McMurray's "Peafowl Assortment" which may include "Blue, Black Shouldered, White, Pied, Spalding, Cameo, Oaten...

    ID my peachicks please?

I've thumbed through similar threads and pored over websites hoping to figure out what varieties I've got, but I'm afraid I just don't have an eye for it yet. [I imagine this is somewhat akin to a chicken newbie trying to figure out the difference between an Ameraucana and an Easter Egger] I...

    "Black Spanish" - breed/color question

Interesting. The one that has feathers growing in blue is definitely smaller. So do you think it's possible I got 5 slates and 4 just happened to be black? I'm guessing the color blue in turkeys is similar to in chickens, where if I mate black to black I won't get blues, but if I mate black...

wounded turkey doesnt want to eat

How long ago was she injured? I don't have any experience with turkeys but I know that when my chickens sustain a severe wound they sometimes lose their appetite for a while and become quite thin, even if the wound is not infected. Sounds like you're doing all the right things, you can only...

    "Black Spanish" - breed/color question

I ordered McMurray's 15-bird rare/heritage turkey assortment, which they said would include three different breeds of hatchery's choice. From comparing my poults with photos on the Internet, it looks like I got 5 Narragansett, 5 bourbon red, and 5 "black Spanish." The black Spanish have jet...
