I just shipped of 10 of my older pullets to a new home. I made a quick 75 bucks and don't have to dress chickens for the pot. The guy is happy as these hens are still laying quite well. It was kinda a good thing for all involved. Now I only have 28.
I put a wanted on Free cycle and got a hit within 12 hours. I am waiting for the person to get back to me but she said she had a "large bator". I have visions of a sportsman dancing in my head!
Today I was in the local Wally's and noticed that they now carry layer feed, scratch grains, and chick starter. Layer crumbles were manna brand and 4 bucks cheaper than at the local elevator. As much as I like to support the local guy, cutting my feed bill by a third would be nice. What would...
The bug is upon me. I will be retiring at least 10 of my pullets. They are just about 2 and will become chicken pot pies. So I need to replace them. I have 5 California whites that are far too smart fo their own good, so they may join the trek to freezer camp.
I have 9 wee ones in the brooder...
RIR eggs from Tomahawk lines. These are beautiful birds and fine layers of large brown eggs. I will collect them the day the auction closes for maximum viability. I would be interested in swapping eggs of any large dual purpose brown egg layers.
Last week I had 2 birds showing feather loss. This week 2/3s are losing feathers and egg production is 1/2 of normal. I just assume that it is lice, mites, or fleas from the straw in the coop. I bought some expensive stuff yesterday at the Ranch store. I can buy it in quart lots that you mix...
I had 2 hens with pecked off breasts. I have added wood ash to their dusting spot, but am thinking about dosing the house with a miticide. Do I need to discard my eggs? if so for how long?
I finished out my hatch yesterday with a grim conviction that the last 3 eggs were goners. I cleaned the bator and have begun to set the temp again. I am hoping that it is locked in pretty well from the last hatch as it fiddled with it very little. My Sobe bottles that are my heat sink were...
Yesterday our kitten managed to work the bator cord out of the wall. When I discovered the problem hte temp in the bator had dropped to 77 degrees but the humidity had spiked to 86%. They were on day ten and rocking along. My question do I gather and set a new bunch of eggs or ride this one out?
I ordered a used LG. fabricated a plywood patch for the missing window. She is holding temp like a champ. My prob is that i put too much water in and now it has been hollding 68-72 percent humidity.
I have pennies over the vent holes and have made tiny adjustments because I would rather worry...
I want to build a small bator. I was in the pet store the other day and saw the heaters for the reptile environments. Would one of these in a box work? To me, it seemed more fine tunable that a light bulb or two.
Hagrid my roo got some frost bite on his comb and wattles last week when it hit -14. I have never kept a roo this long and his comb is so large that it is probably very hard for him to keep it warm. Other that treating daily with bag balm what can I do for my boy? He seems in good spirits and is...

I am thinking of a small cage in the coop where she'll have a nest box, water, feed and enough room to poop. When she shows a little broodiness, I'll throw her in there. The roo has been taking care of business so we should be good that way. Unfortunately this week has been down to zero every...
