Well I left the gate open to see where everyone went to bed. She is in her "maternity" coop with the chicks under her. Do you think I could move them all to the big coop and move my other two broodies into the maternity coop now?
Our SL Wyndotte went broody at about 9 months old so we gave her a few eggs and ended up with 2 chicks. She has been in a separate coop in an adjacent yard to the rest of the flock. She has done well protecting her chicks from our Lab and Doxie (who would never actually hurt them).
The chicks...
We have 14 hens. Three of them are nearing two years old and are Americaunas. We have not received a single egg from them since our first freeze, they did also start to molt around this time. We have seven 9 month old hens that started laying about a month or two before the first freeze. There...
Well the couple said they were only able to catch her because she was brooding on four eggs, so she is laying (although not in the 2 days we've had her understandably).
Oh my goodness that case is horrible, so sad!
She may just have deficiencies or something, but with such a simple treatment I'm happy to be safe rather than sorry and just treat now. She didn't mind her little foot spa at all :)
I think we are getting closer to telling her breed thanks to...
Isn't she beautiful?! Thank you for your help.
I am worried about her feet though, I'll have to get a closer picture. I just took a closer look at them and she is missing at least one toe, and a couple are deformed, her scales are very rough. I think I'll do an oil treatment and add some dt to...
She has apparently been roaming between about 6 yards for the last few weeks. She started brooding and the couple was able to finally catch her, we took her in.
She is TINY! Bantam I'm sure, but what breed? They said she was laying an egg a day, is there any way to tell age?
She seems to...
A couple found this hen in the neighborhood and she has been hanging out for a few weeks between about 6 yards. They finally caught her and we agreed to take her in. Any idea what breed she is? She is tiny, same size or smaller than our 3-4 month old pullets. She is laying an egg per day. I...
The entire bottom of the run is covered in hardware cloth so nothing can dig in or out :)
I had planned to plant peas or something that will climb in the cinder blocks.
I'll have to go check out that coop contest. I did take some pics along the way so I'll be sure to post more later. We...
The entire thing with the run is 10' x 16'. It's been a long, labor intensive process, but it's getting closer! My husband and I have been working to complete this coop and run for our girls. It's not finished, but it's close enough that they can sleep in it now.
Wish they'd stop digging out...
We got four Ameraucana laying hens (about a year old) today. We already have seven 12 week old pullets, we haven't had to clip their wings as they seem content staying in the yard and have only flown to sit on the fence a couple times. I was afraid with these new ones that not being their "home"...
We rescued two orphaned Mallards on Mother's Day, they were already about 3 weeks old. We have been letting them free range with the chickens all day and putting them in a coop at night. Pretty sure we have a boy and a girl (one quacks the other doesn't). Today the girl (who is smaller) got out...
Thank you! While there is still some tension between the two we haven't had any additional issues in the coop at night so I'm hoping they got it all figured out amongst themselves!
