I certainly can't answer for that yet -- these are my first birds of this breed and are still growing -- perhaps some of the earlier posts from Shellz would be more informative. I only have one rooster I'm considering culling, and will be moving just one hen to the mixed laying flock. Yellow...
They are just four weeks on Monday. Love them so far! They are all business in that run- Flies don't stand a chance. Really great to see.
That's our Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy in the last photo - he's 5 mos old now. He was hopeful that this was yet another of mum's creative places to...
What are the parents look like my babies
They are chicks from Greenfire, the original importer of this breed from Europe. Check out their website for their breeding stock pics. - very few of these birds in the US.
Belgian Malines flock update - First day out of the brooder into the small mobile coop. They caught a big bug within 3 minutes of being out on grass and are good little foragers. There sure is a lot of awkward and ugly between the adorable fuzzy tiny chick stage and the handsome glossy adult...
Very large, feather legged, dual egg/meat breed. Docile, good foragers.
Here's a pic of adults - this is from a BYC Malines thread and these birds are in Canada, owned by BYC member Shellz
Here's the link from Greenfire : http://greenfirefarms.com/store/category/chickens/malines/
Full disclosure, I purchased these on auction and got 11 for about what they are selling a single chick for on their site. I like rare breeds, but I'm not THAT fancy!!! Hope we will love them (do so...
Yes -- they will go out "on pasture" very soon. We have about an acre that is a combination of garden, pasture, and orchards that we fence off into "paddocks" for the chickens so we can rotate them around where we want them. I'm putting little clumps of fresh sod into their brooder every...
Oh my goodness! We occasionally have them traveling through our area around this time as well. So far, our property has been avoided, but my parents down the road get the same type of visitor!
Added some Belgian Cuckoo Malines to our flock. Will get better pics as I can -- these aren't the best. Also have four lovely little BCM pullets from Marquisella that are doing great -- ready to start integrating them into the main flock soon.
.
Will do -- and will also try to get some better photos -- last night wasn't conducive to getting good shots. So far these guys aren't as gregarious as my Basques were, but they are friendly and calm. Like them a lot!
I agree -- we have a group of crows (how many crows does it take to qualify as a murder of crows, I wonder?) I really have come to depend on to let me know about "happenings" around the property. They are my aerial watch dogs!
Hello all -- been away from the forum for a couple of months (oh those pesky work/life details that get in the way!). Sorry to hear about the recent losses, and hope everyone is otherwise doing well. We added this little bit of ridiculousness to the family last month - he's also keeping us...
