NY chicken lover!!!!

Always nice to find your ducks and chickens on your front porch...not!
Can't wait to go outside in the rain and spray it down! :-/

Oh, so excited! I just went out to the coop, picked up a few eggs, but also checked on the broody coop, and one hen has the chick I posted, and was eating a smelly egg that was just yolks looking. She has two more eggs that I stuck in some water, but couldn't see too much going on, but couldn't say it was nothing...so I changed the padding in there and looked at the other broody. She has been quite devoted to one wooden egg and another egg, which has a little hole in it and a tiny beak moving around inside! That was the exciting part!

Welcome new people.

Lynzi, sorry to hear that DH won't be continuing in the job he loved. BUT, if he loved it and it will be going through changes, it could have been uncomfortable. This way, he can think about what he would truly love to do and pursue that! I hope in a year you and he will be loving the situation you have found. I have confidence that since he did a fine job at this wildly successful restaurant there will be lots of interest in him.

I haven't been to the zoo in Syracuse in quite a while, but years ago they had a Fisher cat there. My neighbor thought he saw tracks in the woods in the snow...right, Matt?

We needed the rain, but I think I will try to do some raking tomorrow, smells a bit musky out there, or maybe it is the failed egg.

Thank you for all of the burdock tips - I thought it was just a weed!

And, I had no idea about the Rochester Poultry Show - it's so close by, I'm going to have to make sure I can go. :)

Good Afternoon all!!

I did set up a map for those interested. If you would PM me the nearest city/town/village/hamlet/burb that you live in I can add them to the list as you desire.
- I will send you a PM :)

I am more and more convinced that Waffles is a cockerel. I really don't want to give him up if that's the case, but my village doesn't allow Roo's - and, I think he'd need more than two hens to be happy.

Will squirrels go after chickens? We have a TON of those, and even with a 6' fence around my yard, I hesitate to leave the chicks outside unsupervised.

Squirrels will take small chicks and definitely steal eggs if they can get in the coop. Nasty buggers they are. Rat traps are good for them or my special peanut butter sandwiches.

Glass - I must have missed your first post about the chick under the broody. I was actually wondering how those broodies were doing and then some congratulated you on your chick. I totally missed that somehow. Anyway, so excited for you and your new little one!

DH got his first offer letter today but it's for the job in RI. It's a good offer but RI is expensive!!!

Why is it if I'm looking on CL I get places like the Poconos or Rochester or Rome or White Plains? Do they really think I'd drive that far.

I'm looking for a small window for my large hoop coop. Right now I've hung a large fan to draw off the heat. One hot days it's can get to 100. With the fan maybe 80. I can let them out on hot days but if they're broody I think the eggs just can't take it. They never seem to hatch anything in that coop. I got one chick for the first time ever.

Chickens deal better with the cold than the heat. I've a friend who lost chickens due the heat.

Plus a friend in Israel who tried Brahmas but they couldn't take the heat either.
