NY chicken lover!!!!

I haven't been on in a while and I missed tons of pages. Sorry if I missed anything! Not too much going on over here, looks like out of the five goose eggs I ordered two were fertile and they are developing well. Hoping they both hatch so I can avoid a lone gosling. Since the ravens around here are stealing my chicks, I have to keep my two broody hens locked up with their babies. They've taking to co-mothering and it is so cute to watch. Snap, my LF brahma orpington cross only had one baby while my tiny little cochin bantam had five so this is working out well. Now if the cochin gets too overwhelmed, huge Snap takes a few babies. Very cute.

So I was over on the Pennsylvania Unite page... and they have a lady who has put the following map together of all the people on that page

Peeps on the PA Thread can be found here: http://www.communitywalk.com/pa_bycers/map/1552784

If anyone is interested, I could put something like this together for us NY people.

Just a thought

Sounds good to me!

Oh, those locations definitely exist...particularly in the southern part of the state.  But be prepared to fork over even MORE moolah for those kinds of locales.  $$$$$$$$$$$$

The only thing I'm not looking forward to IF he were to take this one is going back to paying that yearly car tax-bleh!

LOL...car tax, fire tax, sewer assessment (times 2 for us, because our property was split into two lots...one of which couldn't even be built upon....got a fire tax for that property too), etc etc etc. You know....we got nailed with that stupid car tax for an entire extra year after we moved out of RI because I wasn't aware that you actually have to return your license plates when you leave the state, otherwise, they continue to assess car taxes. And no, you can't send in proof of registration out of state.

That made me SO mad. I swore I'd never give another red cent to that state after that one. Crooks.

I have a question? Is there a complication of morehens disease called toomanyroos fever? I got a little crazy with the fertile hatching eggs and I am looking at all the chicks in the grow out pen(16).(And I sold 13 prior) Some are Orpingtons and I am having a tough time sexing them. Some are 8 weeks others are 12 weeks. Recently we went tp PA for our daughters graduation from college. So, of course, I had to stop at CJ Hink farms for some Lavender eggs!
You don't realize how bumpy the roads are unttil you have fertile hatching eggs in the car! I added some of my own EE and OE to the incubator and all are developing(23 eggs)

.They will be hatching in 12 more days if all goes well!

Oh how I pray some are hens!
I want to breed the lavenders and continue with EE and OE. Rancher says 2 roos for each. Is that really noisy?? I only have one rooster now and he is very mellow. I have been reading about giving roosters away. Do you wait till their older? I think I have 2 blue orp cockerals, One black cockeral and know I have 2 EE roos. Any guidance is greatly appreciated I did find a processor close by 3.50 per bird.I would feel better if they went to happy homes.

I hope when this batch hatches I can put the bator away til next spring!

Thank you for all of the burdock tips - I thought it was just a weed! And, I had no idea about the Rochester Poultry Show - it's so close by, I'm going to have to make sure I can go. :) - I will send you a PM :) I am more and more convinced that Waffles is a cockerel. I really don't want to give him up if that's the case, but my village doesn't allow Roo's - and, I think he'd need more than two hens to be happy. Will squirrels go after chickens? We have a TON of those, and even with a 6' fence around my yard, I hesitate to leave the chicks outside unsupervised.
I am going to Mumford too. Maybe both days if I can swing it. My kids will be participating in the youth APA show on Sat. And we may enter the open show on Sunday also. I have to check with the extended family for a couple of beds There are two shows in Bath the weekend after Labor Day. WNY poultry club show is Sat. & twin tiers poultry club will be Sun. Both at the fairgrounds.

Squirrels will take small chicks and definitely steal eggs if they can get in the coop. Nasty buggers they are. Rat traps are good for them or my special peanut butter sandwiches.
I have seen squirrels run thru the electric netting, never near the coop though. My dogs keep, them off the property mostly. I have seen chipmunks run through the coop and the hens chase them away,!!! Rancher I used a large piece of plexiglass as a window last year. If you need it for ventilation you could frame the plexiglass then frame some hardware cloth and hinge then together so you could open the plexiglass window when needed. Just a thought, I got the plexiglass from a reuse store cheap.

Thanks for the idea. I'll see what I can come up with. Whatever I use I'll have to cover with hardware cloth for sure.

I keep planning to drive down for chicks, but not just yet. Perhaps next spring if circumstances improve. She has the best Orps in the NE IMHO.
