Thanks Liz, I am sorry to hear about your losses. I had their poop tested for worms about 6 weeks ago, and everything was normal. So I am thinking maybe sour crop? Not sure. Never had an issue before. I just switched over to their metal waterer for winter so they have not had AVC in their...
1 1/2 year old BR Hen
Has never been sick until 1 hour ago.
Blood coming out of nose, gurgling when she breaths, very full sqishy feeling crop, hiccups??
was fine all day. Gave her some bread soaked in water with ACV in it. Gave her some grit, massaged the crop a bit. Any advice would be...
This is an interesting topic. I lived in Minnesota for 28 years. Then relocated to New Hampshire, and currently live in Massachusetts. I have seen plenty of eastern coyotes, and they are large no doubt. However, I also had the chance to see, and hear wolves in the BWCA. That is something...
I have seven hens that are 1 1/2 years old. All are acting very normal. Getting about 5-6 eggs a day. All are good weight and eating well. Noticed bloody stools two days ago. Very bloody. I have no idea who it is because there are quite a few bloody poops in the coop, and in the run...
We just put our three week old Cornish out in their portable pen, and they acted like they were in heaven. I think there is nothing sappy about caring for your meat birds. I feel the same way about ours. I was worried they would be cold with the temps in the 60's during the day and mid 40's...
I would have to say the guts part was fairly simple. I had more difficulty with pulling out the crop, esophagus, and wind pipe to be honest. I did manage to get everything out with one swoop; cut around the vent and right into the offal bucket. The feathers must have been in the way during...
Thank you for such warm replies. I have to say this is the best chicken noodle soup I think I have tasted. The broth is out of this world! I will try a razor blade next time. We currently have another batch of 12 Cornish X's in the brooder who are two weeks old. This guy was given to me by...
It was not as bad as I thought. The end result was a 4lb 8oz beautiful chicken. The thing that was hard was cutting the vein in the neck. I was surprised at how much pressure needs to be applied. Brand new knives from MM too.

When we do let them out to free range they cruse all over the place. Generally they do not hang around the coop, unless it's egg time. If we are out in the yard I unplug the fence all together. They will get a small zap if they do touch it, but not like a wet nose would.
I have seen bears in our yard every year, and with a hot wire run around the top and bottom of the run I have had no problems. (Knocking on wood!!) I also bring the grain in EVERY night. The grain will bring them in just like a wild bird feeder. I got the entire set up at TSC for little to...
Coyotes are creepy. Do you have a TSC or other store that sells farm supplies close to you? If so get some electric fence insulators, and some 14 gage wire (enough to go around the top and bottom). Run a hot wire 6" off the ground and about 8" from the top of the fence. You don't have to...
We just got our first dozen Cornish X's at TSC. They grow like crazy! Then I got a call from the store manager that a lady who bought chicks there 4 weeks ago ended up with a Cornish, and needed to re-home it. They didn't want to butcher it so we took it. The thing is HUGE at 4 weeks...
