Urgent Help Needed for bumblefoot hen!!!!!

Liza was septic - she was on amoxicillin. Her bottle says Amoxicillin 100mg - give 3 capsules by mouth 2 times daily until gone. May need to refill. Exp 1/1/2014 Refills 2 I thought this might help if you happen to have some amoxicillin. She was on hers for 10 days. The vet pulled her off them...

    Please Help me!

Food. Chickens put a lot of stock in food. If you don't give any treats unless they're being social with you, you'll go a long ways. Another trick I use is I don't give treats to get my chickens to let me catch them. That just made them suspicious of the treats. I only give the treat after...

    Injured Hen...Any Advice?

She probably has a really bad case of muscle fatigue and being dang sore! You might want to treat any abrasions with some neosporin to keep opportunitic parasites off the wounds and help them heal. Stress and dehydration will have depleted her system. If you could offer her some vitamins and...

Only one chicken left after attack--how to get her friends?

Not difficult at all :) When I call the cats I get 2 chickens and 2 cats. I don't even have to do the chicky-chicky-chicky thing lol As my cats can barely stand one another (they're siblings) I was kind of surprised to see my chickens pair off one with each cat. I didn't think cats and chickens...

HELP 8 week old chick has suds coming from mouth

Sugar is an accellerent for bacteria in compost piles. Its often dumped into a compost pile to heat it up and feed the bacteria. If she's eating the compost adding sugar to her water probably isn't a good idea.

    Chicken germs

No. Per my vet - there is very little risk in handling a sick chicken, let a alone a well one. On the other hand, on a daily basis you face an enormous risk handling a grocery cart that hasn't been sterilized after each use - cash that nobody ever seems to wash - touching the table or chairs...

What did your chickens do today?

My chickens are having a day outdoors. Gracie, being broody and madder than H E double L at being forced to spend time outdoors in the sunshine decided to leave Liza to hunt bugs on her own. For some reason Gracie really likes one of my cats. Its mutual with the cat sleeping next to her crate at...

    Bumble foot

I have a bird who had only one tiny external display of "bumble foot" on her back toe. It was just a tiny dried up scab with a slightly swollen toe and some thickened and hardened skin over it. Removed by my vet. Her blood was drawn, a fecal sample taken. She came back with having a staph...

Need Help. What is 400 mg in a teaspoon. Chick meds. please.

I think the confusion is will the chicken get the right amount of medication in the volume of water it consumes. Yes, it will. The medication is "self dosing" by volume for the weight of the bird. A chicken will typically consume twice the weight in water daily that it consumes in feed weight...

I started a binder or print outs and have a OneNote notebook ongoing. I only have two chickens in my flock lol But I was getting totally lost due to lack of record keeping. I was using a calendar after the first few weeks to track medications. Now I'm doing a tracker in OneNote. I'm tracking...

Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

Thats not always true. You can adopt a rescue for as little as 0$. Rescues charge 300+ for "premium dogs " to help offset the cost of caring for the ones nobody seems to want to adopt.

I think she sprained her leg :(

I'd set her up with food and water that is easily accesible. She might be getting dehydrated from an unwillingness to use her leg until she absolutely has to. If you could offer her a crate with food and water to stay in until she improves that would really help. She might have just sprained it...

Duck attacked by coon, injured wing

I don't know what to do for a duck either. I live near lots of wild ducks and every single one I've found injured or wasted to the point it no longer tries to escape has been beyond my efforts to help by the time I find it. I use to try and then quit. But I also didn't know about BYC until...

    Oregon

Question for you - a bit off to the side but you seem to have a lot of experience hatching and raising chicks, etc. How much more difficult is it do you think to successfully raise a chick from day two in comparison to adopting a hen who is already nearly mature? Say a pullet that is 7 to 9...

What's Your Chickens names and Why are they named that?

I name my pets after my ancestors. I don't know why, I just do. I have Grace (Gracie) Zerilda and Elizabeth (Liza) Bellinda - my newly adopted chickens :) I also have two cats: Sister Margaret (Sister) and Tonk, her brother. One oscar fish - who was formerly known as Hank. After my...

    Broken Beak Please Help!!

A de-beaked factory chicken generally has their beak cauterized. This is an additional insult to the nerves and the structure of the beak. I think looking at your girl her beak should grow back fine over time :0) Just watch to make sure it doesn't cause her to drop off on her feeding or water...
