Chicken germs

I am new to chickens and the guy I got them from said that they could carry some diseases. So I try to wash my hands after working with them. My question for you guys is what are experiences with chickens making people sick. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No. Per my vet - there is very little risk in handling a sick chicken, let a alone a well one.

On the other hand, on a daily basis you face an enormous risk handling a grocery cart that hasn't been sterilized after each use - cash that nobody ever seems to wash - touching the table or chairs at a public eatery or using a public restroom. Hand washing and awareness is a very good habit to have
