Okay, so my California Grey hen, Lilac, has been struggling with bumblefoot in her right leg for a long time now. I clean it out, put neosporin on it, and wrap it. It will go away in about a week, but this is the third time its come back. I gave the flock a bath because I was having some trouble with lice, and noticed that she had bumblefoot pretty bad. Just the pad of her foot was swollen - it wasn't THAT bad. So I did what I always do, and then checked it in two days, and it looked like this. Well, actually its been three days, it didn't look this bad yesterday. Her right toe is gross, when you squeeze it, its like its full of liquid you can see moving around under the skin. And pus is leaking out of her middle toe. The way her right toes are all black, I wonder if they're dead. She won't use, she barely moves at all. I'm getting pretty worried so hopefully someone will have some advice. At this point I am totally at a loss of what to do. Believe it or not, its not the
camera, her foot actually is green, purple, and pink.

That looks bad, I don't know what gangrene looks like, but that's what I would imagine it looks like. She needs an antibiotic, and fast, because that could kill her quickly. If you can t get her to a vet, I'd see what kind of powerful antibiotic you can get from someone like the chicken doctor.. His website, if you want it, is www.firststatevetsupply.com. He can advise you, for a small fee. If I were you, I'd hurry. Plus, the infection can get into the joint. Foot wounds in chickens take a long time to heal, and I bet it was something you were only touching the surface on with the neosporin. Good luck.

Liza was septic - she was on amoxicillin. Her bottle says Amoxicillin 100mg - give 3 capsules by mouth 2 times daily until gone. May need to refill. Exp 1/1/2014 Refills 2

I thought this might help if you happen to have some amoxicillin. She was on hers for 10 days. The vet pulled her off them after the last checkup because she's doing okay but losing weight again. The amoxicillin was super hard on her system. She's on a restricted diet of nothing but oats, nutrical and vitamin drops right now.

By the way, giving a chicken pills does not work. At least not for me - I was told to put them inside of a cheese pill. That didn't work either. So he told me to pop some poppcorn - 2 cups of popped corn - soak that in 1 cup of water - squeeze the water out: put the contents of 3 capsules into 3.5 mL of the popcorn water and dose her that way.

and what you see in your hens foot is necrosis. The flesh is dead or dying.

Thanks guys, for replying so quickly. I just ordered some amoxicillin tabs from firststatevetsupply.com, so glad for that advice. So, necrosis - it definitely looks like her one, maybe two toes are dead, but what does that mean. I mean will she just lose the use of them, do you think they'll fall off (thought I feel crazy asking that)?

Would epsom salt soak work for this you guys? I have heard that sovereign silver (although expensive from the health food stores) will heal the g. green in people. (it's under 20 bucks here) Don't know how you'd be able to keep it on here foot unless you wrapped it up. It's a topical and is a gel. If it were me I think I would try it if they're ok with taking in silver because it's a high percent of silver in it. Sure wouldn't want to lose a foot. :( I'd be trying just about anything to heal her foot at this point. :( Bless her heart! Also wondering if swimming around a little would help it since she wouldn't have to put any weight on it. Man I sure hope she gets ok. please keep us posted ok?

Just make sure and not get the water too hot like the second link on here did. Bless her heart I know that bout killed her she did that but sure hoping her chickens ok by now. I think I would just do luke warm water once I got the epsom salts melted if it's as hot there as it is here right now. ughhhI noticed on one of these links below someone else said something about the sovereign silver to. They say that's some awesome stuff for g. green in people!

I just found this info..... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/515081/is-it-safe-to-flush-a-wound-with-epsom-salt-solution

She could try that stuff, Idk. i don't know if the toe would just fall off either, but I don't think it would be like frostbite. I think I would soak the foot, just to help speed the healing, and epsom salts we use regularly for chicken foot soaks. You need to be as aggessive as possible, and anything you can do, do it. And don't waste any time!

I agree with you. The time it takes to order something she may lose her foot. :( They said don't let them drink the epsom salts.

Alright, so tomorrow I'll try soaking her foot in epsom salts. I'll also use some sovereign silver, as I do have some of that on hand. Someone said something about having them on a special diet. Is organic layer feed fine, or should I be feeding something like oats? I have her in a carrier inside and it doesn't look like she's been eating much of the regular feed.

Just got some amoxocillin capsules 500/MG Each. It says dissolve six capsules in a gallon of water and administer for 10 days. That sound safe? How could I do that for only one chicken who is in a cage by herself. Just giver her a little everyday and refrigerate the rest, or.....? It also says do no eat the eggs? Is that while you use the medication or forever? Just really confused here.....
