Going to say that if combs are any indicator, the two barred cochins are well and behind some other cochins for comb development. I have 3-4 suspected roos (partridge, SL, blue, and gold laced cochins) that are much bigger and pinker than the two barred cochins above.
We got these in my son's hatchery surprise order. Eight barred chicks in the mix. The first two are Cochins, the middle three have rose combs (assuming Dominiques), and the last three appear to be BR. Any thoughts on what genders I might have here? Sorry, I don't have better pictures of them...
Whichever they are, they are very quick birds. We are selling some other breeds, but keeping these, some BOs, EEs, Wyandottes, Royal Palm turkeys, and Rouen ducks.
I have six of these chicks. There was one that I thought was a separate breed, due to crazy markings on its face, but I cannot tell it from the other five now that baby down is gone from its head, so I am guessing that it is possibly the same breed as the other five. I am pretty sure I have...
Anyone want to take a guess at the genders on these chicks? Pictures with multiple chicks have more than one bird in them. They are not pictures of the same bird, but groupings by type.
I have three groups, the ones with the suspected Delaware or Columbian Rocks, the Jersey Giant or White...
I have had hens raise batch after batch of (bantam) EE/OEGB/Cochin mix chicks. Never did have a problem with mine being picked on by other hens. Mine did have the opportunity to free range. I had Roos (a pair of Self Blue D'Uccles) that took on raising some orphaned chicks (mom died shortly...
Just curious what anyone thought.
There aren't any bantams in this group. We have several pairs of nesting hawks in the nearby area, so I requested that they just leave off any bantam breeds so that they wouldn't become hawk fodder in short order. I'd rather get less chicks and have them...
We are still at the breed guessing stage with our Hatchery surprise order from Cackle Hatchery.
1. Two Rouen ducks
2. Five chipmunk pattern chicks, straight combs, clean legs.
3). Unknown
4)
5) Unknown. Feathered feet, straight comb. Looks lighter feathered and...
Even with the crazy markings around the eyes? It doesn't have eyeliner, but slightly darker oddly shaped patches, with dark rims around that. I have some others that I am pretty sure are either Brown Leghorns, Welsummers, or Speckled Sussex. Here are some other pics of the bird in question.
I looked back at pictures of the chicks we got with the last surprise batch, and I am pretty sure these are Lakenvelder chicks. We had one with that same set of dots on the head, and it turned out to be a Lakenvelder hen.
Wow, been a while since I was on here. We got out of chickens for about 18 months. They were pooping in my dairy goats' water, not cool, and we didn't have a contained set-up to keep them separate and healthy. Now we have a separate area, and my son is in charge of raising them. We got a...
I am starting by worming them - since we had roundworm issues with one of my doeling goats, we'll start there. We know it was roundworm because a fecal was done on that goat. She didn't have cocci in her stool.
We've. Also come to realize that our soil is iron-heavy, and it is causing...
I haven't been on here much, as my goats are keeping me on my toes (breeding, roundworm issues, etc....).
My pullets, hatched in March, haven't been laying since August. Some look to be missing a few feathers on their heads near their combs, and a few throughout their body. This is a variety...
And my six month old EE Roo is not crowing or mounting either. He was sold as a pullet, but developed a thicker comb and red wing feathers at around 8-10 weeks. Now he has hackles and saddle feathers, and totally looks the Roo part, but isn't that rooish in behavior. The freezer camp chicken...
I have six BOs, five BAs, four RSLs, and three EEs that were all hatched mid-late March. Only one RSL is laying. All four RSLs started laying in July, and then in early August, they suddenly stopped. I think BO was laying too. There isn't much comb yet on the BAs and some of the BOs, so I...
He will be, if he gets to doing Roo duties eventually. We might keep one each of the baby Spitzhauben, light Brahma, BLW, and Cochin Roos (nothing is set in stone yet on this but DH likes the Spitz, and I like the Light Brahmas and BLWs, and think the Cochin Roo is hilarious in his awkward...
The only chicks I am worried about at all are the three dopey polish chicks. They have had feathers removed before from their heads by the other chicks. The rest have had no more issues than the occasional pullet chasing them off some food she wanted. And that seems to have stopped.
I have 23-26 week old pullets/guineas/1roo in our coop. The babies, about 11-12 weeks old now, are in a separate, but close by, pen. All of them free range, btw, so they are all around each other already. They have just been going to different nighttime accommodations. The adults are RSLs...
