Uh! We are still shoveling snow...its never ending up here. Snowing a bit today in fact. We found a place near us that might be able to help out with some animal friendly stuff....so if spring ever comes we may have them treat the yard.
I've never heard that about corn gluten. Interesting. Thanks for the info. I'm hoping we can find a company around us that will be able to help without poisoning our chickens.
I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this so tell me where to repost if necessary...but in October, there is going to be a wedding in my backyard. We were planning on fertilizing and planting grass seed to get the grass to look a little bit better and to get rid of weeds before the...
I just got my meaties today, 40 of them. They are about 4 days old but I got them today. I just went down and checked on them and a few are wheezy and sneezed a few times. They are only wheezing every once in a while, not with every breath yet but does anyone have any idea what to do?
No, I'm worried about predators...although I haven't had troubles yet, it will be my luck that as soon as I buy such an expensive chicken, it will get killed. But with how pretty they are, I may have to chance it!
After checking out that link, you are totally right! How funny....here I am stressing about a broody hen...maybe I should let her know that since we've got no rooster she's sitting for no good reason...
That would mean I have 2 semi-broody RIRs? Is that even possible? Lol! Both of them will sit on eggs (or nothing) for like 2-4 days at a time, then stop. Chickens are so weird!
So I've had a RIR (about 7 months; laying for a while quite regularly) who has been in the nest box for 3 days...I've been checking on her to see if she's broody, sick, egg bound, etc. When I went up to her (a few times each day for the past 3), she puffed up and "growled" at me. She let me...
I'm only willing to go as far as Flint. I know that's not very close to you guys though so I understand if you can't make it that far. I have all 3 roosters together now in the same 6'x8' hen house and 20'x30' outside enclosure and they get along. Right now they are very, um, sexually active...
Fred: I was thinking that it was a recessive Dom trait since there is so much interbreeding between BRs and Doms. Like maybe one in 10 have a bit more Dom in them or something (of course, I have no idea what the ratio really is). She's definitely unique to our flock! :D
I dunno. The comb is much smaller than a Cuckoo. But now that you mentioned it, I wonder if the others are Cuckoo instead? They say they lay chocolate colored eggs so maybe in a few weeks, I'll find out! Lol!
So I have this 16 week old chicken that came in with the rest of my barred rocks; however, this one has been and is still considerably smaller than my other barred rocks. She has a rose comb (I think) which is more of a Dominique characteristic right? The rest of them have regular barred rock...
I have 2 Black Australorp roosters that I want to give away. I have 3 roos and can only keep one. They are about 21 weeks old and relatively friendly. If no one takes them, I will have to take them to the processor in a few weeks. I hate to do it, but they can't stay...
My aunt who used to...
I have 9 "almost" layers (expecting some eggs within the next week or two) and 7 "babies" (layers too) that are 4 weeks behind the older layers. I need to buy more feed (which lasts about 3 weeks with this flock). Currently I buy Purina Flock Raiser (20% protein) but I wanted to switch to a...
I had them processed a week or so ago. They dressed out to 3 lbs 8 oz and 4 lbs 7 oz. At least it gave me a trial run for when I get the big bunch of meat birds that I actually planned on getting later this summer.
What a bummer....I was planning on raising some meat birds in late summer so I would've been prepared for their deaths, but I wasn't prepared for these ones to go. Well, thank you for your more-expert-than-mine opinions.
