Muscovy eggs hatching and they have two moms -- and I have some questions, please!

I have a third baby! Seems to be doing fine from what I can tell. I did manage to roll out and grab one egg they are sitting on. Not an easy feat let me tell you! No heartbeat or peeping when I went to a quiet place and put it up to my ear and I only have a flashlight. It was black in there with...

Muscovy eggs hatching and they have two moms -- and I have some questions, please!

My two Muscovy girls who are BFFs went broody a little while back. I wanted more Muscovies, and decided to try hatching eggs, since they were ready. I bought a dozen fertile eggs off Craigslist and put them in the nest. The girls have spent the past 30+ days rolling them from nest to nest...

Chick bloody toe - pecking by others

Anytime a chick or chicken has an owie you must put something like Blue Kote or similar on it. I use a product that is thick like pine tar and is also blue. When my silkie chick had somehow gotten a blood feather broken/picked on her foot, I had the same issue. I brought her inside, cleaned it...

    Speck of blood in poo?

I saw some more poo with a little blood in it this morning in the coop under the roost. It was otherwise very healthy (solid, etc.). Chicks are all healthy, eating, etc. However, I did put the Corrid in their water. Hopefully it's not something else!

    Speck of blood in poo?

Ok, got Corrid tonight and will start treatment in the morning. Thanks! BTW all seems normal in the henhouse this evening.

    Speck of blood in poo?

I noticed a little speck of fresh blood in an otherwise healthy chicken poo last night in the coop under the roost. Upon further inspection, it was the only one. My six girls (8 weeks-ish) are all healthy, eating, drinking, running around, etc. just fine. In fact, I've been holding them (I call...

Found a (living) chicken in a parking lot behind a terrible slaughter house...options?

I googled chicken rescues in Philly and came up with the following: Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, upstate NY (845) 679-5955 Farm Santuary, upstate NY 607-583-2225 ext. 221 They might be able to help and/or provide you a contact of someone who can help. Do you have a small dog or cat...

    Ideas for small run

I bought nine chicks and then bought a coop/run that would house nine chickens. So I thought. I did not know the 10sf rule at the time, I just went by what the coop builder said. I figured they'd know best, right? Well the coop is definitely large enough, but the run is 55 sf. Two of them were...

    Problem with nesting boxes?

You don't want them in the boxes until they are about to lay. Otherwise they hog them for sleeping and pooping, not laying. To get them further in, put a light in the coop or add more windows. Mine were doing the same thing until I put a battery operated light in there, towardvthe dark area...

What Age do Chicks start to Roost?

Mine napped and played on roosts in the brooder but just last night started roosting at night in the coop. Imagine my surprise when all but my silkies were "missing" last night! It took me a minute to look up. They are about 2 months old.

    Washing a silkie's "hair"?

I gave my chicks some watermelon, cut in fourths (small, seedless) and as the silkies were eating it, they were obviously rubbing their topnotches in it. Now their notches are brown and all slicked back and gross. I thought it would go away on it's own at some point. I was wrong. How can I...

Blue Cochin ... Boy or Girl?

Will wait and try again. Thanks!

    Are Silkies generally "slow"?

Yes, it is the ladder type. I have not seen them really use it like it's supposed to be used though. Part of the problem is that the Amerucanas (two) are first to go in and they want to sleep in the doorway so the rest of the chickens line up on the ladder and chirp loudly. Lately I've been...

Blue Cochin ... Boy or Girl?

My Blue Cochin is about 6 weeks old. Tina Turner's comb is the same size as the others (8 others, totally different breeds) just more red than peach. Thoughts? BTW the liquid on its neck and chest is watermelon (you should see my Silkies!).

    Are Silkies generally "slow"?

I have nine chicks about six weeks old. The Silkies (Laverne and Shirley -- though I suspect Laverne is a Lenny) are actually a week older, so seven weeks. They are getting the hang of going into the coop at night by themselves -- slowly. Night before last my Amerucanas were the first up the...

    Kicked them out...now what?

Mine are just fine in temps lower than that. My coop is well ventilated but not drafty and I have nine. They are about six weeks now, I guess? I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can always feed them a little corn scratch before bed to help them keep warm. When I put mine to bed (which is...

    Are you living in Sin?

It's funny in Oregon because Portland rules are some of the most lax in the country yet when you get into the suburbs, even the ones that are far out and border the urban divide, you are lucky if you can have chickens at all. Most of those suburbs just began to allow up to three, no roosters...

Hmm, I will check that out. Thanks!

    Kicked them out...now what?

The guy at the feed store told me that a two gallon water fount should last 2-3 days. Uh, not quite. For my 9 chicks I must fill it every 24-36 hours. I'm probably going to get a bigger one and put this one on Craigslist. I would feel ok going away for the weekend with a 4 gallon fount for my flock.
