    Sick hen

One of my hens had a bit of eggshell in her vent. It is red and swollen. She also has a bump to the right of her vent. Stuck egg? We are not sure and have no idea what to do. We washed her off and she seemed to feel a little better, and the hemorrhoid, or swelling seemed to be better. Help

    people with house chickens

We make them oatmeal with raisins. They love meal worms, raw sunflower seeds and cheerios. They love red grapes too. We feed them a variety of snacks off our list of OK stuff to feed them. We however do not let them get into cat or dog food.

Our 4 hens won't eat pellets. They are very spoiled, yet not 24/7 indoor chickens.

    Blood spots in eggs

I have 4 hens, no roosters but sometimes find blood spots on the outer edge of the yolk. I am concerned because I give away a lot of eggs. Is this a bad thing, and can they still be eaten?

Good article! I wasn't washing my eggs, but now I know I can safely do it using warm water and a gentle scrub. Thanks

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We have only had one hawk fly over as far as we know. The chickens (no roo) made ungodly sounds, very unusual. They all ran for cover under the bushes. There was a hawk sitting on the storage shed next door. We threw rocks at him and yelled. He flew across the yard and onto our shed. Same...

It could be a sickness, but there are certainly worse things than wanting more chickens. I know I do!

    Antibiotics and chickens

Thank you all for your valuable advice. It makes sense. I was pretty surprised when the salesman suggested antibiotic drops in the water. With all the advise out there about to not take antibiotics, I certainly don't, and neither do my cats and dogs. I see no reason to give them to my hens...

My biggest hen had a little blood on her egg

Thank you much! As I said I am always in a panic mode with something happens to my pets. JJ seems to be ok. I will keep a close watch on her. My Chloe (cat) is 17 years old, needs an extraction of one of her teeth. It will probably cost 6 to 7 hundred dollars, but not for 6 months, until her...

    people with house chickens

None of my hens ever stay in their coop. They only lay their eggs there. They want to be out whatever kind of weather. They get sopping wet in the rain, and stay out even if there is 6 inches of snow. They all get very restless unless they a in their free range place. (our whole back yard)...

    people with house chickens

I have trimmed my girls wings ( just one) several times. We have an 8 foot fence, but they still could fly. A friend of mine showed me how to do it. It doesn't seem to make them of balance at all. We have a ramp to their laying {place) and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. They are all...
