My EE lays in weird places ...

As a follow up to the EE that was laying in the coop/run (anywhere but the nesting boxes). I removed the plastic nesting box floor liner from one of the nesting boxes and put in pine shavings instead. The next day the EE laid in the pine shaving nesting box. For the last 3 days she's laid...

    Water freezing

I use the tank heater that I got from Tractor Supply however at very low temps (lower than 15F) the vertical poultry nipples still froze. I purchased some horizontal nipples and they have stayed thawed down to single digits. We haven't had a below 0 temps since I got the horizontal nipples...

My EE lays in weird places ...

My EE also lays in odd places. She has laid a couple of eggs in the nesting boxes but recently (past 2-3 weeks) I find her eggs in the run (usually near the food). She and her EE sister are on the bottom of the pecking order (they were added to the flock a month after the rest of the birds...

Winterizing Nipple Waterers? UPDATE Really? No One Knows?

Got this heater yesterday to replace a bird bath heater that was not keeping the nipples from freezing and so far it works great. It was 15 degrees overnight and the water and nipples were still running this morning.

How do I keep my chicken's water liquid in cold times?

I use a 5 gallon bucket with poultry nipples in the bottom and use this deicer (http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/farm-innovators-multi-use-utility-deicer-250-watt). It was 15 degrees last night and the water and nipples were working great this morning. Prior to getting the deicer from...

    Water freezing

I'm using a 5 gallon bucket with poultry nipples in the bottom and a bird feeder heater inside. This morning the water in the bucket was not frozen but the nipples were frozen so no water for the girls :( I filled another waterer but need a permanent solution. I was thinking of epoxying the...

Adding a 4 week chick to a flock of six 6 week chicks

Since the main flock is only 2 months old and won't be using the nesting box for a while, I put up a piece of hardware cloth between it and the coop in order to give the flock a chance to see the 2 new girls. After a few days (probably a little early) I cut a small hole in the hardware cloth...

7 weeks olds run away then come right back

I was holding our RIR a couple of days ago just trying to get them used to being held (and doing a quick health check) when one of the Welsummers (who I think might be the alpha now that the rooster is gone) walked right up to me and tried to bite/peck one of my fingers. Needless to say I gave...

    RIR Rooster?

I would say no. We have a RIR that was supposed to be a pullet and is more and more obviously a rooster. In ours I can see the neck feathers changing now and he developed comb and wattles very early. Also I read on this site that if the comb goes back beyond the eyes, then it's a rooster.

7 weeks olds run away then come right back

Two of them (the barred rocks) will take dried mealworms out of my hand. The rest will peck and eat them if I drop them at my feet. I'll keep dong that and hand feeding them treats and hopefully they'll get tamer. thanks for the encouraging words.

7 weeks olds run away then come right back

Our current flock of 6 chickens is 7 weeks old and whenever I go into the run they all run under the coop as quick as they can but once I'm in the run they run right back up to me looking for their treats so I guess I have them sort of trained. I'm hoping that as they get older they get more...

Adding a 4 week chick to a flock of six 6 week chicks

The Easter Eggers came today and are in the brooder on our sun porch. They look about 4 weeks old which is about 3 weeks younger than the existing flock. The plan is to re-home the rooster Saturday and start introducing the new girls to the 5 remaining girls next week. Hoping to get a cage...

    6 weeks - do I have a rooster?

Wow! Well that does not bode well for Mr. roo. Looks like my wife will be getting those Easter Eggers after all. Thank you very much for the help!

    6 weeks - do I have a rooster?

Are RIR roo's traditionally loud? If this is a roo, I'm faced with two choices: 1) rehome him (as I'm not too interested in butchering him) to make room for two Easter Eggers that my wife wants or, 2) stick it out an see if he's all that loud/aggressive.

    6 weeks - do I have a rooster?

Well that's a bummer. Wasn't looking for a roo as we're pretty close to our neighbors and would like to avoid noise complaints. Thanks for the terminology lesson :)

    6 weeks - do I have a rooster?

We got our flock from a feed store on 7/10 and everything has been progressing nicely. We have 2 welsummers, 2 barred rocks & 2 rhode island reds. One of the RIR has already developed a pronounced comb and under beak flaps so I'm afraid its a rooster (and not long for the flock...

    What don't your chicken like?

My chickens are young (6 weeks) but are not interested in watermelon, strawberries, lettuce or earthworms. They love mealworms (live or dried) and dogwood berries. I'm hoping their tastes grow more varied as they grow.

Adding a 4 week chick to a flock of six 6 week chicks

Hello all, We started our flock on 7/10 with day old chicks (2 barred rock, 2 RIR, 2 wellsummers) but my wife really wanted to have easter eggers as well (alas, the feed store did not have any in stock). She mentioned it again tonight so I am debating getting a 4 week old easter egger from a...

    Naming chickens?

We are waiting for some personalities to show before naming our 4 week olds. As we have 2 each of Welsummers, Barred Rock & RIR, we've named the "breeds" Omelette, Caramel & Scratch but I'm sure we'll come up with more as we get a chance to get to know them more.
