I have just been given some chickens by someone moving to live on a boat. .... a warren hen and a black rock hen, and what they described as a bantam cockerel. They have had him a couple of years, he just turned up in their garden, possibly dumped because of his crowing.
What breed please?
My husband called me today, just after he left for work, telling me one of my chickens was out in the lane. I went out to find this little chap. (Not mine, I only have large fowl and this is clearly a bantam)
I haven't managed to catch him yet but I will keep trying. Is he a pekin?
This little guy came as an extra. Any ideas of breed? It is about 5 days old. I am fairly sure it is LF as it is same size as the cream legbar chick, bigger than the polish bantam.
From the breeders website my guesses are silver laced wyandotte, exchequer leghorn, barred rock or black copper...
If I was to breed different colours within a breed what happens? For example if I put a white leghorn cockerel with a brown leghorn hen, the offspring would still be leghorns, but will I get a few white and a few brown or is it a bit like mixing paint and I end up with a mixed up mess??
These hatched from Burford Brown hens with BCM cock. Burford Brown is a dark egg laying hybrid, the actual heritage a closely guarded secret, cocks or hatching eggs practically impossible to get hold of. Anyway, of 6 shipped eggs, my broody hatched these 2. At 10 weeks old now and still very...
I know the picture is really rubbish, but these wyandottes are 15 weeks old and there is very little difference between them apart from the saddle feathers. One has quite skinny saddle feathers while the other has wider, less pointy feathers. They both have very small pinkish comb and wattles...
I have chicks that are 13 days old and I think we have cocci. There is bloody poo in the run, one died this morning and a couple of others are really listless, just sitting, all hunched up with feathers puffed out. The regs on medicines are strict here in the uk and you cannot get corid or...
This chick is our very first brahma, and could be blue, buff or lemon pyle I think. Anyone got any ideas which it might be? Also are there any tricks to work out gender with brahmas?
These are 7 weeks old. Father was black copper marans, mothers warrens, bluebelles snd Plymouth rocks. I'm sure the blueish one on the right is female and the middle two male but what about the white one?
I put some shipped eggs into incubator on Saturday. I candled as I put them in to check for airsacs, cracks, porous shells etc. most looked ok.
I just candled again tonight (day 4) not expecting to see much, but can see veins starting in at least 3/12. However, one brahma egg did not seem to...
I have a sussex hen about 24 weeks old. I know she has worms and have been treating for this, she also is sneezing, shaking her head and rubbing her beak against things. I have removed a piece of grass that seemed to be stuck inside her nostril. She also has a cough that makes her sound like...
This is 8 week old cream legbar. I had always thought it was a boy however someone on the legbar thread said its a girl. Can I ask for opinions, and please can you give reasons. I'm not doubting anyone (you probably all have way more experience than me) but I would like pointers for what to...
This white mutt's mother was an ex-battery hen, father is white, that's all I know. She is 5 weeks old and has 5 toes. I say she because she behaves that way, crouching rather than upright stance, runs away from any conflict, however she has very chunky legs, but no sign of comb. What do you think?
At a few days old these 3 welsummers all had eyeliner and v's on their heads and so we called them Rosie, Lily and Daisy. I am now wondering about the comb on the one at the back. Do I need to change Daisy to Dave?
