I've noticed one of my hens being very lathargic the past couple of days. When I entered the run today I walked all around her and she never moved. She lays there and nods off like she can't stay awake. I don't see anything wrong with her physically. Any ideas what the problem may be?
I live not far from you. Go to www.johnsoncad.com and enter your parcel # or address to find out how your property is zoned. If you are SFE section (2) says no livestock or fowl. Pigeons are only allowed if they are for competition and are registered as such. If the land is zoned for ag then...
I found this forum about six weeks ago and read all I could about coop building and chicken behavior. I built a playhouse type coop and run on the frame of an old three sided horse shelter.
I picked up two barred rock and two buff orpington a few days ago. My dog is very interested in the...
I don't know how you northern types deal with all that snow. We get a "dusting" every four years or so and that's plenty for me. Very nice job on the coop!
Do not attach the metal directly to the osb. Attach some 1x4's to the osb and then attach the metal to the 1x4's. All the nails or screws should be in the 1x4 and not the osb.
I had not thought about what they will be able to get on their own and just keeping the feeder full will be much easier than feeding every day. digitS', you are correct, that is a Texas flag and no worries here about cold weather. As a matter of fact I already need to mow the yard for the first...
Thanks for the quick reply. I did not think they would care but wanted to be sure. Leaving the door open in the summer will help with ventilation in the summer.
I will build a separate door with just wire on it that swings the opposite direction from the solid door.
I'm building a raised coop (4'x8') three feet off the ground with a 12'x8' run. There will be a large door on the side of the coop facing the run that is 3'x3' for access to clean etc.
If the door is left open at night will the chickens still roost in the coop or do they need to feel more secure?

I'm between Mansfield and Burleson in an unincorporated area south of Fort Worth known as Rendon. It was "in the country" when I moved here in 1987. Lots more houses and people now but I have a couple of acres.
Just started building the coop this weekend and am new to chickens. Found lots of good stuff on this site including pics to help me decide how to build my coop. I think I have decided on getting Barred Rocks when the time comes.
