If you handle the keets regularly - get them familiar with you and your voice - they'll be a bit flighty, but they'll warm up to you. As they grow, give them occasional treats. They love millet - they adore grasshoppers and crickets. It takes time and consistency, but most of my guineas fly or...
Your guinea cock may try to mate your hens if they were raised together and/or there aren't enough female guineas. I'm in the process of selling one of my guinea pairs, because although the male has a female guinea mate, he frequently tries to mount my chickens. The chickens; however, want...
Going by personal experience, hawks will occasionally take on full-grown guineas - they definitely go for the little ones (lost a young 'teenager' that way one year ). I actually saw one dive for my flock once, and fortunately, the hen he had his eyes on zipped into the bushes and all the hawk...
Food grade diatomaceous earth can be added (in moderation) to chicken feed as another organic form of parasite control. Although in my opinion, it works best sprinkled on the chickens, the coop and/or the ground in areas the chickens dust bathe. It helps get rid of lice, mites, etc. Just make...
If you're giving them green things to eat, cleaning up regularly, and putting down straw, they should be fine. Chickens can be hard on grass, and although it would be nice to have large, lush pastures for them, many people don't have that kind of space. Just be sure they have somewhere dry to...
I know this is an older post, but one of our Marans laid a small, round egg (about the size of a large marble) and I was curious if anyone on BYC had ever had something similar happen. Glad to see our hens aren't the only ones throwing out unusual eggs. BTW, those big eggs are awesome too...
Glad Barcode and her guineas survived that nasty weather! Sorry some of the other chickens didn't. Like Barcode, I'm looking forward to the spring thaw! Keep the installments coming - I love this chicken! The guineas too, but that's a given.
I've always had at least one male, so I can't speak from personal experience, but my understanding is that they're like chickens - she should lay eggs even without a male. Guineas are seasonal layers. though, so even if she's old enough, she probably won't lay until spring/summer.
As other mentioned, treats and long poles seem to work best...It's not easy when they're being stubborn, though.
We had an ice storm a few weeks back, and one of our guineas decided it was the perfect night to roost on top of the loafing shed instead of in it. She survived the night, but we...
Guineas always make a happy ending! I'm so glad that Barcode made friends with them and that they look out for each other. Can't wait to hear how their adventures continue!
Lol - my guineas and chickens only tolerate each other, and the guineas often come to 'tattle' when our marans chase...
I hope it gets better. We have a loner guinea that our main flock chases away all the time. Although she occasionally follows the flock around at a safe distance, she's sort of bonded with our goats. She spends a lot of time in the goat yard. You never can tell...
