Our beloved duck has lost her companion and our neighbors are not happy about her vocalizing her loneliness. We have considered getting another Indian Runner for her but can't find any resources here in Oregon.
If anyone knows of a place for her -or- knows where we can find a new Indian Runner...

I was worried you might say that. We have a nice big run, covered in one part, wire in another and can extend it to include a pond area. Maybe that's the best thing. Our chickens love to free range and I was hoping the ducks could too, but you're right, Indie could get hurt trying to...
Thanks xfilesnumber1fan!
So, are you saying that if I clip his/her wings she'll still fly to the lake or she'll fly just not as far? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I just don't want to do the wrong thing. The lake is over a few houses and a couple streets away, but we can see it from our...

So, she (he) could develop the white stripe on the neck and her brown/black bill could turn orange/yellow? I'm new at the mallard thing
And clipping feathers needs to be done by an avian vet? How often?
Still young and if it is male the ring around the neck, green head and rust...

I'm not sure if I can let her out of the run anymore but that seems cruel. SHe is 2 months old and was free ranging during the day with her buddy an Indian Runner female (same age) when she just decided to fly to the nearby lake. We took the Indian Runner (Lorelei) with us down to the lake...
Lost 2 chicks this week...one in the brooder soon after a perfect hatch and the other just seemed like failure to thrive. This is the first time I've lost any chicks...are BC Marans more fragile? I'm sad but know it's the cycle of life...hubby held "Sticky" until she took her last breath. No...
Has anyone ever used the "Rooster Booster Vitamin and Electrolyte Powder" with Lactobacillus for sick chicks? It's all I have right now. I have one BCM 3 day old who is always at the bottom of the pile-up and sleeps all the time, doesn't seem to be eating. I thought I would mix some of the...
I think you're right Julie...I always had a sneaking suspicion since Silver was a couple weeks old that he was a "he" So that means out of 9 we have 5 cockerels!
Thanks everyone for your help
Thanks both of you!
I will go out and see if they'll cooperate for another photo shoot
So, do we think #3 (Willow) is a pullet? If she is, she's kind of mean to the others.
Stay tuned.
I got eggs from a farm where they didn't separate the breeds. This was an incubation project for my daughter's school.
Any guesses? And thank you!
The brown one w/tufts on its cheeks, "Mei Mei" looks like an Americauna to me but roo or pullet?
The darker brown one (who has an...
Did you check to see if he has diarrhea? Sometimes they get a bug/bacteria and need antibiotics, also there is merecks sp? going around according to our avian vet. Also, check it's breathing to see if it is raspy, rattling or crackling. That would indicate a need for anitbiotics. I hope...

That coop is amazing! I'm excited to see pictures (I haven't gone to the end of the thread to see if you've posted them). You're chickens look beautiful and happy. I...
4. No Trolling (posting to provoke others, luring them to flame or rant). Trolling is sometimes done involuntarily, so please be considerate when posting.

many people use the tilt method for the hova and LG without problems. If I had spikes that high, I would look for the real reason.. for starters, I would turn the thermostat down..

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried using a heat lamp to turn on when hand turning eggs in a hovabator and use it to bring the temp up more quickly? Would there be harm in this. Mine has 2 windows and I wonder if the direct light on the eggs would be harmful or as long as the temp inside...
I had a lot of trouble tilting a hovabator...it threw the temps off and I had spikes of 110 degrees and higher and lost a hatch of a dozen or so...So, I would caution using that method for egg turning.
So, I'm in Oregon where humidity is pretty neutral right now. I added some water to my trays...
So now I just read that wood shavings is not good bedding? So I guess I'm going to be putting towels in the little box until I can get some hay. Going to soak some layer crumbles and see if he/she likes it. We'll see...TBC
