Sponsored Post Win an Ecoglow 20 Chick Brooder from Brinsea with your best tip for winter!

This will be my first winter with chickens, and our winters here aren't harsh, but I have a plan in mind... I use deep leaf litter in the coop, which should help keep it warm at night. Also, I plan on giving them a scratch snack before bedtime and using heated waterers to keep their water from...

    Feather loss

Some of the areas are just bare. The skin is not reddened or anything. In some of the places I can see where feathers are starting to come back in.

I will post a picture tomorrow. The girls are already locked up for the night. The feather loss is only in her rear though.

Yes, my chickens free range. They were also free range at the farm I purchased them from.

    Feather loss

It is definitely possible that she was getting picked on by other birds, because they had a bunch where she came from, and she is the most docile bird I've seen and probably wouldn't do much to stick up for herself. No, she is not laying yet. I had not considered that she may be getting ready...

    Feather loss

I have a question about feather loss. I had gotten some chickens from a lady (1 cuckoo maran, 1 red dorking, 1 japanese bantam) They were all about 16 weeks when I purchased them. The maran was not specifically chosen by me, but by one of my kids. I had never seen a cuckoo maran in person...

    Sick Chicken Help

No I have not checked her for mites. Could this cause respiratory type signs? You are a silkie breeder, do you ever see eye infections from the fluff getting into the eyes? This is what she initially thought was causing the problem.

    Sick Chicken Help

Okay. How likely is it that this is not chronic, since none of her other birds are sick? She had been treating the eye infection for almost a week, I just don't know how well she was giving the medication. I actually got some other birds from her about a week ago that are still in quarantine...

Hi, I'm Sara. I just joined BYC and am hoping to learn lots of new info about them. I just started raising poultry this spring and am completely addicted to my birds. I also got some ducklings this summer too and am enjoying them as well. My flock is of mixed breeds, but my favorite is a red...

    Sick Chicken Help

Hi. I just got a sick Silkie from a friend. She had been treating what she thought was an eye infection from the fluff touching the eyes. I told her that I would take her since she didn't really have the time to medicate the bird properly and she wasn't getting any better. All of her birds...
