It WAS the hawk I just question my hubs thought that it was Redtail. Doesn't really matter what kind of hawk, I guess, but I have no clue if hawks can be discouraged easily.
Husband came in saying he had seen Redtail(I ? this tho) strike behind one of our structures then I couldn't find Princess, the WH duck. Drake, the Call drake was wandering around(how smart) while all chickens had hidden and I found Princess sitting vewy vewy quietly hiding in chic shed. She...
Eewwwwwwwwww. Will have to pay more attention with next chicken I do. Have never noticed on them. Probably smaller/in a different location? I learn everyday. I generally skin the chickens we've eaten so thats probably why I haven't seen them.
They were mutts from unexpected hatch and given as I don't trust people enough to "rehome" them we processed. I had never cooked duck before and it turned out ok after the 2nd attempt but the processing was gross. They had glands on their tails that I THOUGHT were part of the "drake" feathers...
Thanks! Actually just found it on my own(computer cooperated!!) I missed the fowl at the ohio state fair this year and coincidentally there were 3 BJG cockerels there for sale and a few bantams and it got my mind back to getting Jersey Giants.Nov. 9and 10. Can not wait.
I want to try some BJG and before I order from hatchery wanted to see if any known reputable breeders in Ohio.Tried looking on here and it appears there AREN'T any but just in case....Thanks.
I see the need for stopping chickens ability to reproduce, nowadays, because there are SOOOO many being dumped or fed(inhumanely) to predatory pets.Too many people on cl handing over free cockerels/roos to "good" home only to have person receiving fowl feed them to their other pets(which is fine...
OK. Thanks. I have not the patience nor time for doing the down but that sounds neat.I generally skin my chickens but have never cooked duck and the ONLY suggestions I have gathered thusfar have been to leave the skin on and roast like chicken(which is easy/yummy) so will just leave duck in hot...
I now have 5 ducks(3 ducklings hatched 7 weeks ago) and am overwhelmed with animals so long story short-Is it feasable to cook the 3 ducklings at 8 wks. of age or is that too late/early? They are WH/Call duck and I understand they aren't traditional meat ducks but can NOT keep more animals.The...
Still can't guess sexes but it doesn't matter. They do excellent with the routine of being turned loose in a.m. for a few hours then cowboyed back to pen for more food.Noisy noisy bunch(when I am feeding).Ma is WH and Da is, supposedly, a Call.
My ducks have always been "rescues", in the sense that they came from situations where people didn't know what they were getting into, and have had ducks for 12 years and NEVER wanted ducklings so major oops but they will stay with me because I am the one that allowed this to happen(learned my...
I have a WH duck/Call drake and the 3 offspring(unintentional) they produced and don't know much about sexing ducks. Any thoughts or do I just wait for their grown up voices to tell me(I have always found vocalizations easiest for me)?Sorry for 2 identical pics-don't know how to delete.
Thank goodness only the 3 have hatched and only see 1 intact egg now so hopefully thats a dud.Princess, WH ma, is seeming to do a good job and ducklings got into their 2" deep pool earlier and had a blast. I am still too busy to set up a different place yet and will have to think on it.Not a...
