We butchered all of our BCM males... *ahem*
I just paid for a dozen Silver Gray Dorking eggs! Shipping mid-March! Woot! My quest to have living Dorking males continues!
Very cool! I think it took me TWO HOURS to drive down there that time though! And I'd probably come home with a bunch of rabbits, which I don't think the Handsome Husband would appreciate. :) And hatching eggs. You KNOW I'd bring home a bunch of eggs.
Hey ya'll! :)
I know, I know - I have been totally MIA and am likely to go that way again, but it's almost SPRING. And you know what that means... LOL
I'm expecting 8 chicks from Meyer Hatchery in Feb. 5 silver gray dorkings (because after buying all those last year, I never got a male...
Just popping in to say hi! I've been SO busy that BYC hasn't made it onto my list of things I can accomplish in a day ;-)
I came over to post in the meat forum. Anyone have their chickens that have been frozen in shrink bags end up tasting like plastic?
I don't believe the picture being posted here of a "Legacy" is accurate, as the person is very obviously holding the chicken out so that it is closer to the camera, thereby causing it to look huge. Hard to judge how big it actually is, but I believe the photo is deceptive.

I'm not sure if it's because these are the first birds we've eaten and the meat just tastes plasticy or if it is due to the shrink bags? They were red rangers, butchered at 12 weeks.
It also just occurred to me that we only had 3 males and the rest were females. We had about 3 that had a fair amount of meat on them. I think I'll order all males next time, too.
We did the deed today. 12 red rangers butchered.
I am SO displeased with their size!
I think I didn't start them on the higher protein feed early enough and I could only get 18% protein this last bag. I also wonder if I need to find a more easily accessible feeder type than the regular...
