Zach, Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, my horse has been very ill and I am spending all my free time treating him.
I went to the hollister show and saw what I assume were your Cubalayas. They were some of the most striking birds I have ever seen. I had to get back home to do...
Zach,
If I remember right you are in CA. Do you happen to have any cocks for sale? If so, are you attending the shows in either Hollister or Modesto this month? I posted picks of the Cubalayas I got from Urch on this board over the fall and I need something with a much better head to breed...
I am not for sure that La Fleche are "the one". The male I have is mean as all get out, so that does dampen my enthusiasm for them. However, of the 150 chickens (of 40 different breeds) I have had running around here this spring, my eye is constantly drawn to them. I have other breeds that I...
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and I am glad that there were no problems with the earthquakes!
Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for suggestions on selecting my new breed. I am looking into NH's and already have a trio of Anconas to play with.
I started this process by...
I tend to agree with you when it comes to wanting a bird with some "spunk". I have had a variety of hens as part of a "yard bird" band (I imagine most of us have had such a thing at one time or another). Ones that I didn't intend on breeding, but I needed eggs for breakfast and didn't want to...
I have raised bantam Cochins for years, but am moving to a mountainous piece of property in Northern California and would like to choose a different breed that may be more adapted to the terrain and am looking for suggestions.
These are some of my constraints and preferences:
1. I showed a...
I am sure the answer is "no", but does anyone need a 5month old cockerel? I have a black Java and a white Wyandotte that I got from show lines in MN. I have other cockerels from that batch that I am keeping, so these need a new home or they go in the freezer. If anyone could use one, let me...
OK, I spent a huge amount of time trying to get photos of some of my birds. The first is a cockerel that is about 9 weeks old. I believe that he has the best head of all my Cubalayas. However, he has a lot of white incorporated within his BBR coloring. Also he holds his tail higher than many...
Here is a head shot of my Lakenvelder cockerel and also of a pair of 9 week olds that I have.
Personally, I think the pullet is crow headed, but I am always fighting that fault in my cochins so maybe I am just over sensitive to it.
So over the years will you be accumulating like 20 males for every female? How do you avoid fights? How do you avoid not losing either your mind or hearing during breeding season when they are all calling at 2 am?
Oh, and I called on one of the "free peacock" signs. That individual had 11 birds, male and female. Some pied and you had to take ALL of them. I imagine that that represents a lot of the free signs. People just want out of them. Especially since most of the signs appear in the spring.
Our area is a complete mix of property types. My town is pretty rural with lots of veg and horse farms, but I am 30 min from San Jose, so I get all types. I priced the bird at $25 because there were peacocks in neighboring towns listed for $40 (as well as multiple of "Free Peacock" signs in...
I have an extra peacock that I am trying to sell. I have it listed on Craigslist (San Francisco) and our local Yahoo group for chickens. I am getting tons of responses, but everyone responding is horribly ignorant and/or annoying. How does everyone else sell their extras? I am wasting a lot...
