I’m happy to report that she seems to be doing really well! Crop seems to be functioning basically normally, behavior very normal, no swelling in abdomen. I did end up ordering Fish Mox so have on hand, but she was looking so much better when it arrived I decided not to start it.
I can’t say...
I agree with you @Wyorp Rock. The good news is that we are back to solid poop. But the bad is that it smells very funky and the urates are tinged yellowish.
I found some ancient Baytril in my vet kit but it’s not really usable. I think I’ll have to order some fish mox and see if that helps her...
Everything still pretty much the same. She enjoys her treatments but is still having the same issues. However this morning there was the most solid poop under the roost so far and the crop was the smallest yet. She is acting normally but I do think she has an “infection” smell around her vent...
Continuing with the oral treatment. Interestingly, I think the abdominal swelling has actually gone down quite a bit. No one at all has laid any eggs the pst two days (molting).
Crop is still pendulous. Trying to make a cloth face mask work as her bra. If she didn’t have the droopy crop you...
Not much Of an update this morning. There was a little solid poop under her spot on the roost this morning, and no more green solids. She LOOKS like she feels ok-bright eyes, good color in her face. Crop still a bit squishy but had gone down at least some overnight. Still lumpy underneath. No...
Mixed up a concoction of coconut oil, yeast infection cream, and some sort of tropical fruit flavored crushed tums. I had to laugh that it smelled just like a cool whip dessert I remembered my mom making when I was a kid :p
Anyway, Miss Robin gobbled it right down before I could even scoop it...
Found the Tums. I got a roll of peppermint and fruit flavored. I thought I remembered there was an ingredient in mint gum that was toxic to dogs, so wasn’t sure if that is a problem with the flavoring or the gum itself. Is there a reason to use one flavor vs the other for my chicky?
Unfortunately this is my suspicion as well. But I'll try some of these strategies as long as she seems up for it. I never want to cause more pain but if there are some things I can do to try to help, I'm game!
Heading out in a few to find the tums.
Thanks again for the suggestions! I can definitely get her set up as you described. Don't have any calcium tabs and I live in a really rural place so will have to think about where I can track some down- the pharmacy is only open for prescriptions because of covid, and we don't have any...
Thanks @azygous for adding in!
This morning:
Started the yeast infection treatment. She lapped up the ointment & coconut oil on her own from the bowl. Guess that's a hit! She did have a bit of a sour smell when I gently massaged the crop to see how it compared to yesterday. No liquid, but it's...
Afternoon update!
Went out with my glob of coconut oil. She was very hard to catch, even in the run (I take that as a good sign for a bird that’s not feeling great).
I get her all wrapped up in a towel and sitting on a table so I can really look her over. Unfortunately her bottom is a lot...
I would also guess feather picking. I have a chronic feather picker (the tiniest of the group, go figure...) and I've been amazed that the higher ups in the pecking order "allow" it. They do regrow the feathers while they're molting, and every year I hope my picker is going to move on. I've...
Thank you for taking the time @Wyorp Rock. I found that article today and it was very helpful. I will try the coconut oil strategy with her later this afternoon. I think I explained away the weird poop the first couple of days because I know molting always hits her hard, and it isn't out of the...
Hi everyone! It's been quite a while since I've posted, but I was hoping the more experienced people here could help me help one of my 6-yr-old Golden Wyandottes who's been a little off the past few days.
A few days ago (maybe 4-5 days now?), I noticed she had a really large crop first thing in...
Clear eye on miss broody this morning. She was scratching at it a little though. I'm planning to continue the flushing and terramycin ointment today and hope for another clear eye tomorrow morning.
Thanks for your thoughts @Stipenvlerk!
I do hope the foamy eye stays away. The past two mornings it's been there when I open the coop, but gone by later in the day, so I guess I'll keep fingers crossed I don't see it again tomorrow.
Hi all! Haven't posted in ages but logged back in to get your expert opinion on a weird problem I haven't had before. I have a broody hen who, for the past two mornings, has had foamy bubbles in the corner of her right eye. Last year when she also went broody, someone else apparently got tired...
