Thanks for the reply.
I wondered too about the eggs being stepped on. Broody Mama is in a separate cage with her eggs, non eaten so far, and none appear to be missing from the coop from the normal layers. Hopefully the problem is fixed.

I've found 2 confirmed egg eaters in my flock. The odd thing is that both were broody at the time. I read all the ideas about egg-eaters, but no info why a broody hen would do this. The first was removed to freezer camp and now I just found a second broody hen eating here eggs. She is removed to...
Dan,
its been about 5 months since I began using this thermometer and I'm still on the first set of batteries. No complaints at all. Has not lost the signal even once. I do blow out the sensor in the coop occasionally from the dust that accumulates on/in it.

GMO's also have pesticides "built in" due to the genetic engineering. A bug can eat the GMO corn and die due to the pesticide in the corn. What happens when you eat this corn? You get the same pesticide. To say GMO's won't hurt anything or anyone is False.
A good book is called "Seeds of...
I can't agree that water is water. Fresh water from the faucet is as good as water that has sat for days in warm temperatures?
I have a well so no chlorine is in the water.
I keep hearing over and over how chickens need FRESH water. If you wouldn't drink it then you should change it. Hence...
I'm by no means opposed to using the nipple watering system. At this point I'm still using the traditional waterers. I still have to carry water to the coop, so in the end what is the difference? My coop is in a temporary spot for now. Once the final landscaping is done in the back yard the coop...
Sounds good to me, I don't know what PDZ is but I'm sure you've done your research. My one comment would be that if you go with the deep litter method you may want a little more space to get below the roost boxes as that method requires you to mix up the litter once in a while.
I'm not an expert, but the information I have found is that you want it below the height of your roosts. Chickens will roost in the highest spot they can find and you don't want them roosting in/on the nest boxes.
Above the floor, but below the roosts. I built an amish style coop which had...
Thanks for posting a link to this info. It seems to be another all too common case on this website of people posting opinions without telling the whole story. Chickens who get an impacted crop are young chicks. They mistake the sand for feed and eat it. This doesn't mean adult chickens suffer...
Michael,
I have to ask where you learned that fine sand could impact a chickens crop? I wouldn't consider playground sand to be fine, it's much like cement sand. I haven't seen rough sand around for sale unless it's mixed with gravel?
Any further explanation on this would be appreciated...
Depends on What you are securing the hardware cloth to. It's its metal they would be fine as those are self drilling screws for sheet metal.
Wood - no. Not enough grip in the threads.
I bought #12 stainless screws and appropriate stainless washers to fit both head of screw and holes on...
In hot temperatures how often should I be changing the water for my chickens?
Lets call hot above 85 deg F outside.
My waterers are the conventional kind, no nipple waterers.
2 -3 times a day?
Thanks,
Alex
Sounds like you've done your research. Yes it can be mounted indoors. It runs off a 6v lantern battery for over a year (i've only had mine for a few months, but the instructions claim this) so you wouldn't even need electricity for it.
I subscribe to The Family Handyman magazine. I've found it to be a helpful magazine for all sorts of ideas and projects around the house.
The current July/August 2014 copy highlights the construction of a garden shed. The exact one described may be a bit too much for a chicken coop, I think it...
Thanks, yes I will share the results.
After giving the de-wormer to the chickens last night. I noticed a mite on my arm after I came inside. I've inspected the birds in many different spots and haven't seen any, but it's pretty obvious it came from them as the mites don't attach to people( or...
Thanks to all who answered for the help. She did not make it through the night.
I'm sending her to a vet for the autopsy to determine exactly what happened.
I bought the safeguard and will give it to the rest of the flock.
Thanks again,
Alex
Thanks for the info. I will swap it out.
No evidence of lice or mites on any of the birds. I do give each bird a good inspection about once a week for anything abnormal.
Thanks,
Alex
