Here's some pics of mine. Got them last summer, slowly worked my day down to one roo and eight hens. Gave away a few hens to a friend, lots of roos went in the pot. Got to pull some eggs out to hatch some chicks soon. Pics are a few days old, 7 week old last summer, and this winter during a...
I was just going to post up the same questions. My Doms have black spots all over the combs on most of the roos, figured it was frostbite. Very cold and snowy here this winter and I don't have heat in the coop. Doing fine otherwise, healthy and all the hens are laying, but wanted to know if...
I planted a 20'x200' strip of red clover/white clover/annual rye next to my coop early in fall, every day or two I give the birds a bucket of those greens. One of the few mixes that will grow some during winter here. When I get really ambitious I get the push mower out and cut until the bag is...
Well I've been waiting and waiting, even rather patiently, for the first eggs from my Dominiques. They hatched on July 13 so I thought it would be mid-December, but got the first eggs today, January 2!!!!!!!!!!! Heck of a Happy New Year from the birds. Waited all this time for the first...
Took a good look at them today, all have the same body confirmation, but split half and half between single and rose combs. Now I know which half goes in the pot first!
Something else I noticed, the single comb roos are the bolder birds - first to come out of the coop, first to come up to me...
Rocks? Not supposed to be, straight run Doms from Meyer. Some variation in size and comb, but got lots of culling to do on the roosters in the coming weeks. Got 27, want to get it down to 8-10 hens and a few roos before long.
Did finally get them out of the coop with some bread scattered...
All my Domineckers are still growing and doing well. These birds crack me up, lots of personality and fun to watch.
I finally got the fenced run done for them on the coop, it took them two days of staring out the door before they'd come out!
Well 2 1/2 weeks in and the chicks are all still alive and happy. And GROWING! Dang, they've nearly quadrupled in size already! Can already tell hens from roos by the little combs! By six weeks old there's going to have to be a chicken dinner or they're going to eat up my paycheck on the...
Just got my chicks in the mail today, ordered from Meyer Hatchery. Ordered 25, got 27, all healthy, happy and peeping loudly. My poor labrador doesn't know what to make of all that noise out on the screen porch.
I work for the Mosquito Control section of our Dept of Agriculture here in MD, the best thing you can do is try to keep the mosquito population down! One of the worst species for WNV is the Asian Tiger Mosquito, which is a container breeder. Emptty ALL water holding containers around your...
Don't know about toxicity for chickens, but honeysuckle isn't poisonous in general. A preferred deer browse, I fertilize patches of it to make it grow so they've got more food, but rarely keep it ahead of the hungry brown beasties.
Never thought about feeding meat or fish scraps until I read some of the threads on here, have a few questions.
-seafood? I read the thread on fish, but what else? Summer time I've got blue crabs. Scraps from steamed crabs? Raw hardshell crabs broken up? Soft or papershells? Winter means...
I've got a few acres of CRP in my field, with lots of native warm season grasses, things like bluestem and indian grass and switchgrass. Anybody feed the seed heads from these to chickens? Can't imagine a problem but thought I'd check here.
Probably not. I've already got catalogs to order chicks, so no biggie. I'm anxious to see how they'll do around the yard and for bugging, but afraid how many I'll lose to predators. Between the foxes and coons and owls and eagles it could be tough.
I'm just outside of Cambridge, MD! New to the site. Had chickens and pheasants and quail and ducks as a kid, just getting back into it. Buiding a coop and run now, hoping to order some Dominique chicks soon.
New to the site, plan on getting some birds soon as I get a coop finished, wondering if anyone on the Shore area has Doms. That's what I want, was hoping may be some around locally??
