After a year of breed research I have hatched my first clutch of Marans
They came from an egg supplier who packed me some mixed colours. Sadly due to a temperature plummet during the hatch - from 15c to -2c in less than a day even under the hen I lost 3 after pipping but before hatched.
They...
After seeing the amazing artwork from some of you here I have tried my hand at decorating some of my duck eggs. I'm now hooked and saving up for a dremel and other kit.
a final update on Myma
at 5 months old she sadly passed away after a short, sudden illness.
the necropsy showed that her early malnutrition caused irreversible damage to her heart and it gave out there was nothing I could have done from getting her to stop it as the damage was already done.
just an update on Myma
she's improving hour by hour. Has grown and is far more alert and interactive, she's brighter in herself and eating far better.
I now have her on turmeric as an anti-inflammatory to make her more comfortable and she is moving so much better both in and out of water.
I only have one female duck at the allotment - I can hear her from around 100 yards away every time I approach (she starts as I open the gate to the allotment) where as the hens I can't hear until I get to my own allotment (about 20 yards away) unless a rooster is crowing
as far as I'm concerned those pics can be shared far and wide as an illustration of just how important researching the right diet for any animal is. The woman who raised Becca and Mima is pretty experienced with chickens and treated the ducklings like chicks... didn't even consider there may be...
I spoke to the breeder and she was in tears... too little too late imo but she *has* now bought brewers yeast and is feeding it to everyone else
She's working on getting them fed right and try fix the damage already done
here's some pics of Mima today after 2 days in my care (in mum's arms...
I got my first ever ducks in October - two ducklings from someone I know reasonably locally. I had a stubbornly broody hen so got her a couple ducklings to rear simply because they were available.
I read up on their care and thanks to sites like this I have done pretty well, I have reared two...
I am having a traumatic first hatch - if it can go wrong it *has*
Lizzie - Pekin girl - had her first brood, 7 eggs.
Hatched 2 successfully 2 days apart - she managed to steal some eggs after the ones we let her keep and ended up staggered as I hadn't marked the eggs she was keeping
She then...
problem was until yesterday I didn't know which were the 'younger' eggs - am now trying to get the parts for a home made incubator together and transfer them to give them a slim chance - better than none
is there a chance that she would accept the later chicks (if any) back when/if they hatch?
Lizzie my Pekin girl has gone broody for the first time - she is one of last year's chicks at her breeders so is around a year old
We've gone with a fairly hands off approach on the advice of several people on the allotments with it being her first clutch to give her the best chance of...
thanks - so far they have been scooping under side as that way if Cotton isn't in mood her wings aren't actually restricted - she slips out of hands very easily - before being perched onto a wrist - again so she's hopping straight down as she feels like - this was how the breeder showed me (and...
I'm on the lookout for a few more Polish girls - they are kinda addictive - but as I don't drive and they aren't common around here it may take me a while
Cotton especially it turns out is amazingly 'child friendly' - and seeks out my niece and nephew
with my nephew (8)
And my mum...
Updated pics of my little flock
Dandelion - lead hen
Cotton - Dandelion's sister and little cuddle monster
Lizzie (Elizabeth) - prima donna and worm addict
Mr Darcy - a little bit clueless, very earnest bless him
Napoleon, head rooster and real gent
We did have a third rooster - the...
I'm pretty pleased with them egg wise - so far a total of 12 eggs
that being said it takes 5 banty eggs to make a serving of scrambled eggs between me and mum so not many meals out of them yet... now saving them up to make a cake :p
randomly - do you think there would be a market for egg...
just an update - 12 days since getting the flock now
Cotton and Dandylion remain the friendliest but Darcy and Lizzie are fast warming up to people and Napoleon and Lunch make good Digging Supervisors
they get on great with my niece and nephew
and we've had some fun free ranging in the...
thanks :) I wasn't sure what is 'normal' so I can keep an eye on production levels for a health indicator
here's my latest pics of Dandylion and Cotton
