I started out with separate coop and run for 4 silkies. Ended up with 2 silkie Roos and 2 hens. Other flock is 20 hens and 2 Roos. About a month ago, I free-ranged all. One silkie hen died, unknown causes. Other became broody so I gave her 2 eggs, 1 hatched. So now I have all the others...
Now 20 weeks. I've assumed pullet but last night 'she' mounted another hen. No crowing though, but my rooster doesn't like the Cochin. Do you all still think this is a pullet?
Cute story! Now it's time for chicken math- when 3 hens aren't enough, or we want green or blue eggs now, etc. I started out with 6, now have 27! Welcome to BYC! Great place to learn.
Welcome! I lived in Joshua for 7 years until retiring in December 2013. I didn't have chickens there though. I see a few on here from Burleson and Grandview, probably some from Joshua too. Great place to get chicken questions answered, and just lots of nice people!
All mine are outside, even the silkies! They have been inside, but obviously prefer to be outside. Fresh Eggs Daily posted this cartoon. I thought it very funny because all my hens are so similar I haven't named them individually
Me being a Harry Potter fan, my 6 reds are The Weaselys, my...

I hope that works for you and you can keep your girls. I love living in the country - I'd rather have a neighbor who lives in a 20 year old camper than have an HOA.... Oh wait, we ARE the neighbor who lives in the camper... :)
So, after 22 hours with the rooster up the tree, I googled how to get rooster out of tree. Answer was to get water hose and spray him until he flaps down. It worked. Then we caught him and put him with the girls. He strutted, ate, drank, and mated with two of the girls. Then this time at dusk...
I am 62 and my kids are 37 and 40. They are kind, responsible, loving and successful. They haven't always been and when they were late teens and me a single mom, I didn't have much hope. I know lots of women my age with worthless sons and daughters mainly because they were able to bully and...
So we first time chicken farmers get our cute little chicks, raise them in a brooder box, teach them where to roost, and everything is nice and orderly. I never thought about what would happen when bringing a mature free range rooster into the mix. He started out by jumping out of his run into...
