The Reedy Chicken Coop
I have always wanted chickens. I am not sure why. I have never had chickens, and am not sure if I have ever touched a chicken that still had its feathers. I just know I always wanted chickens. My lovely wife was not so thrilled about the idea, but I figured she would...
My initial thought on putting one of my chickens down, was that it would be easy...after all - it's a chicken (I know - blasphemy!). I mean, hey, I eat a lot of chicken, but then, if I were standing there with a hatchet and a stump, could I do it? I was at the feed store this weekend, and...
Hey everyone...got a question -
Let's say you get your eggs daily, but missed a day for some reason...then the next day you have twice as many. Is there any reason you cannot use all the eggs? I mean...are they still good after they have been in the coop for an extra day? I know they can...
I clean mine out every couple months or so. I do use the deep litter method and DE. It seems to work well. My pine shavings are about 6 inches deep, and I turn them every couple of days. I add new shavings as needed, and sprinkle some DE when I do. The birds seem to have no fleas or other...
I hope to figure this out too. My girls have started laying, and they are laying in the back-corners of the coop instead of the laying boxes. I need to try the golf-ball thing.

Now two of the girls are laying an egg a day. One egg is always smaller than the other, so I figure it's two different ladies. Anyway, they have not used the nesting box to lay...just to sleep on and poop in, so I gave up and took it out. They now lay in the back corners of the coop, so I...
YAY...I got my first egg!! Finally! 20 weeks on the dot for one of the girls. The shell was really soft, so i changed their food and put some crushed up egg shell our for them that I had been collecting. I need some oyster shell or something...but...YAY!!!!

The roost is rounded a bit...did not sand it though, and yes the flat side is up.
The nesting boxes are 12" x 12" each, and about 4" deep. They have sides, but the sides do not go above the 4" depth. I will remove it for now and take the legs off of them...maybe that will work.

Hey everyone!
Okay my RIR girls will be 20 weeks old this weekend. They have great red waddles, and are really healthy looking. I put in a couple nesting boxes a few weeks back...they have no sides, and are up about 8" off the floor of the coop. Now, when I go out after dark and open the...
I spent at least $350...

I could have bought a lot of fresh eggs from the local feed shop...but then I would not have my chickens...one of whom bit me last night as I was checking on them...I almost prepped some baked hen for...
Ugh. I just want a couple fresh eggs fried in bacon grease. Yes, I am fat, and may die young of heart disease! My grandpa ate eggs fried in grease most of his life, and lived to see 93. of course he worked hard for a living and I sit behind a desk.
Anyway, going on 17 weeks this...
I can't wait to get my first eggs. My girls are almost 17 weeks old (RIRs). The local feed store sells mostly RIRs and told me it'd be 6 months. I hope not. I don't want to wait another month! I even have family that is looking forward to the fresh eggs. They all thought I was nuts for...

I did not know that. I have a thick round branch in my coop, but I do not think the girls use it at night. They are about 16 weeks now, and I don't think they ever sit on the roost. I will take it out and put in a 2x4 and see how that works out.
Thanks,
Jason
