    Crop Issues

I started raising chickens in 2013 & have always used pelleted feed. Never had any problems with pendulous crop until now. This did happen after I switched to a higher protein egg layer pelleted feed a couple months ago that has a bigger pellet than the 17% protein feed I was feeding. My hens...

    Crop Issues

My 2 year old Australorp hen has developed an issue with her crop. It is extremely large, has sagged and flops side to side when she moves and she has lost the feathers from her chest. It does not fill up during the day and turn firm so she can digest her food at night. It just stays floppy...

Lime Green Egg White in Duck Egg

Thanks to all of you for your help. This duck egg is the only egg I've ever had any problems with & I sell a lot of eggs. I started with chickens in 2013 & sold all the eggs without any issues. A couple years ago I had 104 chickens. My husband encouraged me to decrease my flock & I did so...

Lime Green Egg White in Duck Egg

I collect the eggs on a daily basis. My ducks stay in their coop until I have all the eggs. If I don't do this I will not find the eggs until spring. They are usually out by mid morning. Thanks. This helps a lot. My ducks are on the same food as the chickens, Payback Layer Pellets. Right now we...

Lime Green Egg White in Duck Egg

Has anyone ever come across a lime green egg white in a duck egg? One of my duck egg customers came across this & asked me about it. In the 6 years I have been raising ducks this is the only time I have come across this so I was not able to answer her. Concerned the egg is not safe to eat with...

    Dementia in Chickens

Has anyone every heard of a chicken getting dementia? I have an 8 1/2 year old hen who gets lost every time she is outside. She wanders around in her own la la land world & every night I have to put her in her coop because she forgot to put herself to bed. Other than this she seems to be...

Why do I beat myself up about butchering a few cockerels.

Ok so we butchered three 5 month old cockerel this morning. I feel bad. I hatched them and raised them. But with the virus I didn’t want to take them to the animal auction because of the risk although it hasn’t been reported in the area yet.. they were over breeding the hens, and fighting a...

Suggestions for chicken breeds for kids?

I haven't seen cochins yet on the list of friendly birds. While they aren't great producers of eggs they are cold hardy & the sweetest birds in my flock of 55 birds. My Cochins are also the best mothers I have. I would highly recommend a Cochin for a 4 year old child.

Suggestions for chicken breeds for kids?

I don't recommend Polish for a 4 year old. I had white crested black polish and buff polish. All were hand raised with lots of love yet they were extremely flighty and the white crested polish rooster was quite mean. He attacked me several times. When he bloodied my head that was the last...

    Trouble with Silver Laced Wyandottes

I have had five Silver Laced Wyandotte hens. Every single one wound up with a prolapsed vent and Ilost each one of them. None of my other hens have had this problem and I have 56 chickens of many different breeds including Golden Laced Wyandottes and Columbian Wyandottes. Does anyone know if...

    I have mites.... Help!!!

So, I have a natural suggestion to help rid the coop of those pesky mites. Take the green parts of the juniper tree and toss it into your coop. Don't be to stingy on the amount of juniper used. The mites do not like the scent & will scramble to get out of the coop. This must be fresh cut...

Comment by 'carrierose' in article 'Common Mistakes Poultry Keepers Make (And How to Fix Them)'

Thank you for a very good article. I just have one request. Please be sure to spell check and grammar check before posting any articles. The improper use of words makes it difficult & somewhat time consuming to to read and make sense out of any articles posted. Example: "than" is used...

Ended Official BYC Contest - Post your best (worst) chicken molt pics!

This looks more like damage from an overzealous rooster. I have many hens with bare backs from young overzealous roosters. Be sure to take the sharp points off the rooster's spurs or your hens will have tears in their skin that other chickens will peck at and turn into horrible sores.

Topic of the Week - What do/can you do with unwanted roosters?

My chickens are raised to provide food for my husband & I or the occasional family member/friend in need. A lot of how I deal with a rooster depends on the temperament. If I have an ornery rooster it will go immediately into the freezer. I won't have an ornery rooster on the property. Older...

    Bluing for Algae Reduction

Thanks to all who replied. Will not use the bluing. Will continue to use apple cider vinegar since it helps to cut down the speed in which algae grows. Waterers are shaded at all times to keep the water cooler. My ducks drink from the same nipple waterer as the chickens so need to be careful...
