I'm so glad you talked to your mom, such great insight. Just to add... I get so many eggs each week that I have about 25 eggs left from last week. I started breaking more yesterday evening out of curiosity look them over again. Some had the dark orange yolk (on the outside) as...
Thanks for posting this... I fed them the crawfish at least 2+ weeks ago. I really had to think back of what I had tossed over to them when I got the picture. The crawfish was the ONLY thing different I had fed them.
There are several ladies at my work that have these little steamers. They seem to do the trick for them. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dash-Go-Rapid-Egg-Cooker/37017598
The steamer shown in the link above, has a device that pokes a small hole in the air sack end of the egg.
I steam eggs in a...
I had never fed my chickens crawfish before a couple weeks ago. I had heard or read on the site of people giving their chickens crawfish so I took what we had left over and since I live in the deep South I put them in the freezer and let them freeze. My idea was, on a hot day, I would pull...
Maybe I should steam a couple of last week eggs and see if the same thing happens for me. From my pic below, it looks like the color congregates in a ring. Very odd.
I have a rooster, but I haven't seen a fertilized egg in a very long time. His spurs are too long and he has difficulty with mating. I think his spurs are digging into his behind.
I know I need to cut them, but he's huge so I just leave him be.
So, I did my experiment and take a look at my last weeks eggs vs this weeks eggs. I do feel the crawfish was the culprit, but?
Top 2 last week with the yolk from my customer. I work with her and she has one of those little egg steamers that she uses at work. This way I was able to get my hands...
Thank you for responding... I was beginning to think no one had input, so thank you!
The eggs are the same age and were all collected last week. When the crawfish was boiled, we used crab boil.
I have fed my chickens shrimp peelings before and this didn't happen. This was the first time I...
One of my faithful customers sent me this picture this morning as she boiled several eggs. These eggs were laid last week. It is very strange that all but one had this strange dark orange ring in the yolk.
Any suggestions of what this could be? My hens are not sick that I'm aware. The only...
By this time, I would think you would possibly see some eggs and no crowing. You must have at least 2 roosters because "most" hens don't usually act all crazy like that. You didn't mention how the 3rd one was acting, the same?
Do they all look alike? Roosters look quite different than hens...
Thank you for the feedback centrarchid! Now that you point it out, I'll pay more attention to her vision. She honks a good bit, but I have several in the flock that honk. I'll continue to keep her separated. She doesn't seem to mind being on her own.
My rooster has 28 hens and all of the hens are laying. I have one buff orpington that he will mate and then attack. A while back I had to put her in the isolation pen because he almost pulled her comb completely off. I treated her and it healed up nicely and now each time I try to integrate...
Question regarding 5 hens that I have in a separate 'hospital' due to the treatment. I have a flock of 30 and I've pulled out 5 of them because they were the worst with wheezing/coughing and sneezing. I've been treating these for 3 days with Tylan 50 injections. Because my others in the big...
DurangoChickens,
If you're getting a flock of hens, I don't know that it would be worth your time as they would most likely have already been exposed to Merek's. If you're getting newly hatched babies, I would say... most definitely! My flock has Merek's and I had no problems until I brought...

My momma hen has been flying out of the brooder coop recently so my initial thought was she may want to take her baby into the big run with the other hens and one rooster. I opened the small door in the brooder to the big run and the baby was the first one out. She followed only to jump on the...
I do hope so... Her neck feathers are so long and shiny compared to my other RIRs. She squats already like many of my pullets, but thought "he" might have been trying to fool me. :th
Thanks for the reply!
