To separate my broody or not? A dilemma.

I do have an incubator and I have been studying the day by day development and candling to help the newer eggs. And I have raised many day old chicks, just in case. I am hoping for a good broody outcome, but I am also trying to be prepared for less than ideal situations. Thank you! 😊

To separate my broody or not? A dilemma.

Well, she now has her own broody coop and yard in the chicken run. She definitely was not too happy about the move itself, but she did settle right back onto the new nest, so u am hopeful. I guess the other girls were much more "helpful" than I though! 13 eggs under her and I collect every day...

To separate my broody or not? A dilemma.

I know there are different views regarding whether or not to separate a broody from the flock or not. This is my first broody (in the 6 years I have had chickens!) and I have come across a dilemma. I have my first broody! I have a Bielefelder roo, 6 Bielefelders hens and 2 Cochins hens (with the...

Pullet with leg injury, not sure how to proceed

Yes, all chicks from Cackle and Greenfire were vaccinated for Marek's. And, although I have not introduced any birds to my flock, I did have a group of chicks from Sand Hill Preservation Center that were shipped without the customer knowing and my local post office was desperate to get an...

Pullet with leg injury, not sure how to proceed

So, an update and a much bigger problem. My hen has limped along, some times seemingly better, other times not so much, but she's always stayed alert and a good eater. However, on a downward time about 3 weeks ago, I went to the coup in the morning and she was laying on her back on the coop...

Pullet with leg injury, not sure how to proceed

One of my 5 month old Bielefelder pullets started limping a couple days ago. She was eating, drinking, and getting around ok. I looked at her leg and it looked normal (no bumps, bruises, scratches, etc..) but she didn't want to bend it nor could she close her toes around my finger. Also, one toe...

    Leghorn pullet not laying yet

I have 2 - 55 Flowery Hens (autosexing leghorns, basically) that are 24 weeks old. My gold one (who got terribly sick and I though she was a goner) has been laying now for a couple weeks. Cute little pullet eggs, almost every day. However, my silver one (whose comb developed much sooner) not a...

    Oops eggs from turkeys?

Good to know. Well, as for incubating it, I think I will pass. We are fairly overrun with wild turkeys around here anyways.

    Oops eggs from turkeys?

Yeah, no holes or cracks at all. Maybe a critter was trying to get away with it and got chased off by the dogs? Ultimately, I was just wondering if turkeys will lay eggs that don't have an "egg" inside. I know chickens do occasionally.

    Oops eggs from turkeys?

Don't think it's that. The lawn is mowed every week and the dogs are in the backyard multiple times a day. It is a fenced, completely landscaped yard and, although it was under a bush, it wasn't really "hidden". If it was layed in the yard, it had to have been extremely recent. Either that, or...

    Oops eggs from turkeys?

So, I am familiar with the little, often empty, oops eggs (also known as fart eggs, rooster eggs, fairy eggs, etc...) that chickens can lay on occasion. I have chickens, but I am not really that familiar with turkeys. My question is, do turkeys do this, too? We found what looks to be a...

    Stumped by Lavender Orpington

I agree with pullet. I had a lavender roo and he definitely wasn't as "rounded" and even as a cockerel, he had some lovely, long sickle feathers.

    55 Flowery Hen? Cockerel?

That was why I was wondering if there could have been a "breed mix-up" when I got the chicks. I know the male to female coloration is drastically different for the 55 Flowery Hen (females are colored with "flowers" and males almost completely white). And, of course there is the autosexing...

    55 Flowery Hen? Cockerel?

So, I have 2, 55 Flowery Hens that are about 17 weeks old. Atleast, that is what I am supposed to have. I know they are supposed to be autosexing, but one of them I am not sure if it really is a 55, and, if not, what breed is it and is it a roo? (I got them as day old chicks from a local lady...

    Wry neck and watery poop

Well, I think she may be out of the woods! I tried getting as much Nutri-drench water into her as I could. Food was not an option as she was a complete ragdoll, barely swallowing as she drank tiny bits. She got so bad I was almost positive she wasn't going to make it! But, by mid day today, she...

    Wry neck and watery poop

This morning one of my 16 week old 55 Flowery Hens is hanging her head with her neck completely stretch out, wings drooped, and clear, watery poop. She still walks around, but not much. She seemed fine yesterday, then when the girls came out of the coop this morning, she was like this. Everyone...

    Wasps and wasp spray

I am curious about getting rid of nests in a run and outside a coop, too. Paper wasps don't bother us much, but we tend to get a lot of Yellowjackets and Bald Faced Wasps (hornets) and both of them are mean! I spray weeds with a mix of 1 part 30% vinegar, 1 part water and a touch of dish soap...

    LF Black Cochin Gender?

Thank you! I was hoping for pullets/ potential broodies. Since all of my other chickens are autosexing (55 Flowery Hens and Bielefelders), the Cochins are the only ones I just wasn't sure of. And this is the first time raising Cochins at all so I am really in the dark with genders for them.

    LF Black Cochin Gender?

I have 2 LF Black Cochins that are about 3 months old. One seems a bit more "developed" than the other. I have Bielefelder pullets that are different sizes and know they are still pullets (autosexing breed and all) but I am hoping for more of a confirmation for my larger Cochin. Anyone have any...

    Greenfire?

So, I ordered 4 Bielefelder pullets and 3 LF Cochins from Cackle and then (6 weeks later) ordered 3 pullets and 3 cockerels from Greenfire. The chicks from Cackle are very healthy, friendly, and always curious about anything I am doing. However, I received 3 cockerels and 4 pullets (3+1 extra)...
