We have some 5-6 week old chicks. Almost fully feathered and we are finally having some warme weather so I'm going to put them outside for the day. If they have access to bugs and grass should they also have access to grit?
I got some 2 day old chicks on Sunday. Today I noticed one has goopy stuff on her eye and she having trouble opening it. Like human pink eye almost. I used a warm wet rag and gently wiped it clean. Is there anything I can put on it? Like an ointment or anything?
So we have 9 hens that are 1 YO and 6 that ate about 12 weeks. We have officially had them happily mingling with the older hens for about a month now, but I can't seam to get them to roost with the older hens. They roost on everything but the roost. I have tried going out and putting them up...
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll talk to my husband about putting a roof over the run. I went out yesterday and stirred up the ground with a pitchfork and it is much better today. maybe I just need to do that every so often. I'm hesitant to do deep litter with grass clippings and such...
We use pine flake shavings. We do a deep litter meathod, and add a new layer of pine shavings about once a month or so when it starts to look poopy, and sprinkle Diatamecous earth inbetween layers each time and our coop smells great most of the time. We only completely change out bedding 1 time...
We are also having an issue with the hens laying eggs underneath the coop, I recently found a nest of about 15 eggs under there and I'm not sure how I'm going o get them out, because I can't fit under there. so maybe they are rotting and that is the awful smell? Not sure how long they have been...
We are in northern New York and it is very rainy this time of year. Also Please ignore all the junk around, we are in the middle of major landscape construction.
We have 15 HENS, and to my dismay we can not let them fre range because we live in a neighborhood, and have No fence surrounding our property. Any way, we have good size fenced in run for them that they have ruind the ground in. There is nothing left but mud and poop. this is our second year...
How do you know when a silkie bantam is fully feathered? I have 6 babies,2 are just Basic Red egg layers and 4 are silkies, they are all the same age. The Red chicks are fully feathered but I'm having a hard time deciding if the silkies are because they are so fluffy. We have them inside in a...
I just went to buy a couple silkies to add to our flock just for fun and was told legally they can't sell me less than 6 at a time because the state only approves the sale of poultry for agricultural purpose and they believe if they sell you less that 6 at a time you might take them home and...
I bought these and was told they were silkies, but the farm had them labeled as "bantams" which I know silkies are bantams, but there is more than one type of bantam right? Silkies shouldn't be getting any normal feathers I thought. Any one?
So we have 8 chickens, they have all just started to lay this month. We built them 8 nesting boxes in a row, and they all seam to want to use the 1 box, so in the morning they all sit there and "yell" at the chicken laying until she is done so they can lay. How do I get them to start using the...
We just found our first 2 eggs :) I'm so excited. But..... They were on the floor of the coop in the corner not in the nesting box. We still have them in a temporary coup that we haven't spent to much time on, and the nesting boxes don't have a top, I was worried about it before they started...
My chickens keep getting out. We built an 8 foot tall fence and they are still getting out. My neighbors have to put them back in 3 times a day they said. I think they are getting sick of it. I'm thinking about clipping their wings. Is it humane? How do you do it or do I need a vet to do it
We live in northern ny and it is still getting pretty cold at night. My chicks are 8-9 weeks old, and fully feathered. We do not have them inside in the brooder anymore They have been outside in the coop since the week of Easter. We have been turning off the heat lamp during the day, but how cold...
