Not eating after sour crop/vent gleet

I have a 2.5 year old Ameracauna. She stopped laying several weeks ago, which I thought was because of the extreme heat we've been having. Then I noticed about 2 weeks ago she had some white stuff streaking down her fluffy butt. Then last Monday, she stopped acting normally and was no longer...

Is it frostbite or something else?

Hi Niki - hey fellow NorCo neighbor! Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. The girls won't even go outside, so I'm not sure if I can move the waterer out there, plus on a day like today it would freeze immediately (we are working on a water heater solution right now too). I just feel like I...

Is it frostbite or something else?

Thank you! I agree with your perspective - I'll only bring her inside if it's really an emergency and she's not feeling well. Really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Is it frostbite or something else?

This is our first winter with our flock of 3, all about 7 months old. 1 RIR, 1 EE, and 1 Silver Dorking. We live in northern Colorado, so snow does happen. We've had a VERY mild fall, however, with temps never getting much below 50 in the day and 40-30s F at night. Two nights ago the temp...

Help! 20 wk old hen just laid shell-less egg and is still lethargic/tail up... what's happening??

More updating - I think they were actually "soft-shelled" eggs, as they were egg shaped and had an outer layer, just a very very pliable one.

Help! 20 wk old hen just laid shell-less egg and is still lethargic/tail up... what's happening??

UPDATE - she just passed ANOTHER shell-less egg, about 30 minutes after the first one. I was inside trying to find some calcium pills when it happened and when I came back out she and the other two hens had already ripped open the membrane and were eating the yolk and egg white. I'm going to...

Help! 20 wk old hen just laid shell-less egg and is still lethargic/tail up... what's happening??

We have a 20 wk old RIR who started laying at 17 weeks and has laid 1 egg/day since then. Laid as per usual this morning and seemed fine all day until I noticed she was standing very still in the yard with her tail up in the air. I thought she was egg bound so attempted a lubed-finger in the...

Can a brand new chick be put in with 2 week old chicks?

Aww! That's so sad, I'm so sorry! These darn little birds are so sweet and lovable, it's devastating! The other two hate it when I try to pet them up anyway :( so that shouldn't be an issue ;) I'm hoping they start liking me more when they can eat treats and they start associating me with that!

Can a brand new chick be put in with 2 week old chicks?

Great! I figure one week probably isn't too much difference. I was wondering if I should get 2 new chicks so she had a buddy. But I don't know if our coop/lives can support 4 hens. But maybe once you have 3, another one isn't too much more work?

Can a brand new chick be put in with 2 week old chicks?

Very sadly this morning we lost one of our 3 new chicks :( missing her dearly, but am thinking ahead now. We want to have 3 laying hens, so this Friday when the local store gets in a new batch of chicks, we'd like to pick one up. My question is: can we put the new chick in the same box with 2...

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

Well, I'm sad to report that Honey Boo Boo passed away this morning. I found her barely breathing and held her until she was gone. Thank GOD my husband was there with me, as I was a mess! It was so weird, yesterday I lowered the heat lamp to warm up their box, and she really seemed to turn a...

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

Any suggestions or perspective would be greatly appreciated: Honey Boo Boo is doing about the same today, not better, but not worse. She's now 4 days old. She did eat with vigor for a short time yesterday and again today when I saw her at lunch. It is encouraging to see her do that, however...

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

Oh no! I didn't know that. I feel like I'm doing everything wrong! I'll post about how she's doing. They seem to be setting down for the night, I hope maybe whatever is affecting her passes :(

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

Should I isolate her? She seems to want to be with her friends so I'm hesitant to take her away but if she's sick I guess she should probably be on her own. She won't lay down even though the other two are laying down to sleep, she just stands and cheeps.

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

She just pooped and it was pretty much just liquid, so now I'm terrified I overdid it with the electrolyte water in the dropper. :( Agh! This is so hard. I just hope she pulls through. She just follows the other little ones around and tries to be next to them and closes her eyes. Thank you...

New Panicked Mom to a Lethargic Chick

We brought home our three, first-ever (for me), chicks 48 hours ago; they were 1 day old when we got them. Other than 2 pasty butts on morning 1, they seem to be doing well, no pasty butts today! Except for one of them, Honey Boo Boo, who has been a little sleepier than the other two since we...
