Can I downgrade my feed in winter from GMO/soy free to regular feed?

I'm trying to figure out what I want to do. If I'm eating the eggs, I would rather my birds be passing on superior nutrition to me and my family. But if we are not eating our eggs in winter, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to switch to a cheaper feed while we are not eating the eggs. I...

Can I downgrade my feed in winter from GMO/soy free to regular feed?

Its my first year with chickens. I buy the GMO and soy free pellets which are about ten dollars a bag more expensive than the regular feed. It would save me a little to go the regular/cheaper route during the winter. Any disadvantages to this? I would start them back up on regular feed again in...

    Weak chicken, please chime in

My friend tube fed her also the first day. She is doing much better now. I'm going to put more fans out, and make a raised area where they like to sit; maybe they will sit there and let air circulate around themselves. If they don't, I'll bring in some sand, as I read that it keeps cool the best.

    Weak chicken, please chime in

Hi all. I'm in Texas and I have six 3 month old pullets. One buff orpingtons seemed heat stressed a couple days ago. They are in a shaded run with water and a mister. This one seems to have less weight on her than the others. I'm on vacation now, and my friend has taken her inside, given...

So if I put the pavers/step stones, then a perimeter of treated wood, it would not rot? What if I instead stained/sealed the bottom six to eight inches of the coop wood bottom inside and out? Would that be adequate? Does Hardware cloth eventually rot if buried? How long would it likely last...

Scouter Joe, definitely. They are only in there while I'm home to supervise them during the day, until we get the roof on, etc. which should be any day now ;) Thanks for the ideas. Dave, on that latch for the main door (the first one you mentioned), is that lock-able for keeping racoons out...

Hi all, I am new to the community and new to chicken keeping. I had a friend of a friend build a coop out of pallets. It's 4x8x6 feet. We weren't sure where we were going to put it and she delivered it in pieces (walls) and we assembled it where we think we want it. Since we decided last minute...
