Yesterday I accidentally did a big no no and left their cage open for three whole hours till checking on them. They're two and a half weeks old and love testing their wings so whenever I open the cage they'll hop around and try to get out of the door. I had to count them three times but was so...
Well you might actually have to wait a few more days. Coturnix take around 18 days (so the day after tonmorow would be a pretty high chance) then you should probably give em another 2 days after that. I get what you mean though, I hade to wait 2 years just to get my quail :D But now I've got 10...
Well it certainly is gorgeous! I'm only guessing here but it could be a dilute? Such a pretty bird though! :D here is a good link to some colors http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/NDG/Quail/JapQ/BRKJapQ.html
Hope this helps!
Once they are fully mature (6 weeks) they'll know how to most likely, probably younger would be able to too. And they don't have to but it makes a happy bird and can keep them entertIned and healthier.
Well it depends on what kind of quail. Do you mean Coturnix? Or just in general? I'd love to help you though, a fact sheet sounds mighty interesting! :)
Yes, the closer one does look like a hen to me because it has a lot more dark spotting but I'm not sure with the back one as I'd need a better shot of it's chest. You may want to watch for behavioral signs like crowing, etc. but you'll probably have to wait another week till you can tell if the...
Salsan, well Bobwhites perfer height definetly, they need more sq feet on the ground as well compared to Coturnix (so they'd do fine with a small roof but need bigger cages. Though a tall pen would make a happy bob as long as it's tall enoug they don't hit their heads). Coturnix need about 1 sq...
Bobwhites are more seasonal layers but A&Ms (They are from the coturnix quail variety) are more likely to lay all year especially with a light in the winter. I think bobs eggs might be a bit bigger but if you want eggs a lot and often. Go with A&M quail. (Also start laying in 6-8 weeks!)
It's possible... but highly unlikely. You may want to check again with the genders. If you keep on getting two eggs it's probably two females. And as Quail Jailer said, Coturnix almost never go broody and if they do they will usually forget about it a few days later. You're gonna need a...
It's very difficult for buttons to live outside unless it's in a nice warm area. You'd have to bring them in during the winter and make sure it's very predator proof. Tone honest I wouldn't recommend putting buttons outside at all but it's possible if you provide them shelter, protection, etc. :)
I think that there wouldn't be a problem with one roo and seven hens because females keep fertility for quite awhile (If you plan on hatching). If breeding is a second priority I'd go with the 1:7 ratio because less hens to a male can sometimes mean the girls get stressed or over bred (Loosing...
Bought some starts at our Saturday market then planted 1/2 of the tomatoes I've planed on doing this season. I have three garden boxes and finally finished one. It contains sun sugar, rutger, big beef, Roma an a large red cherry variety. Also planted my Anaheim and monster jalapeño and lastly my...
I line my rabbits (soon to be quail hah!) cages with puppy pads. It controls odor and kinda dries everything up as well as is super easy to just grab and throw away then put down a new one. It's not super expensive but it can be taped down unlike wood shavings that I had troubles with blowing...
