Thanks. Our ladies are totally free range (except they are locked up at night), so I can't imagine I'll be able to catch her and make her eat soft food. I'll check her tonight and see if we need to bring her back inside. I doubt it, she was running around with her girlfriends last I checked.
Thanks everyone, she made it through the night and is eating, drinking, and talking. I'll probably let her out of "lock down" today. She's seeming very "alert". Anyone know if the hole in her beak will grow back?
Thank you, I don't have any plain yogurt in the house right now, I fried up an egg and cut it really small and removed the applesauce. She's laying down now (but her head is still up). I'm hopeful (and worried). Anything I can do to her beak to make her more comfortable?
Came home to check the coop and my girls and one of them was hanging from the handle of the waterer. Freak accident, had no idea this was possible, but she was hanging there. Cut her down and removed the handle (which had gone through her bottom beak). Her neck immediately went limp (I thought...
I have lurked this board for quite some time. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share Miracle's life with us. She'll be missed. If ever you do write a book, please post it on this board as I'll stay subscribed and would love a copy of it.
Thanks again for the adventure!

OK so GREAT news. While the other eggs haven't hatched, my escapee crazy chicken is now mothering the chicks with the Mama Rock. I just saw her making the tent-thing for the babies and they were leaping from one Mama's back to the other . So all is not lost, FINALLY her instinct kicked in.
OK, I think I may have just figured it out. We live in the wealthiest county in the nation. Never would have guessed that!

I guess my point is I just wish that eating the right way would be more affordable. Wouldn't we all <3 to get rid of the egg production operations? I know several people that simply can't afford $5 for a dozen eggs, if they can go and get commercial eggs, milk, and white bread for that price. I...

Yup! Lifestyle changer. Also read the Ominvore's Dilemma. Terrible state the food industry is in. Just terrible. I'm just glad I raise my own hens. My small backyard flock is just what I need. However, I need to find a place to buy chicken meat, I just can't raise them for meat quite yet.
Well, seems like she has snapped out of her drama, either that or Mama Rock is really good at keeping her off the chicks. I can't tell which one is the Mean Mama any more, and a few hours after she escaped with everyone free ranging I still have all 5 chicks! So, she MAY have escaped lock down...

If the market will bear it in your region, then go for it. These folks were NOT doing anything extra or special, they changed their prices that day based on who was at market. It sounds like you don't jack your prices all around. You did a break even analysis, discovered what the market...

Well said. I just am hoping that at one point we are going to make healthy food (not just eggs) more affordable to all. I can tell you that since the Omnivore's Dilemma, Food Inc., and the Animal, Vegetable, Miracle (and others) that eating healthy is becoming a trend. Trends are...

I wish you lived closer, I am desperate to find a chicken producer! Not common where I live. I def. don't want Walmart crap, I just think that the price changing based on the market smells like greed to me. I do TOTALLY get it though, we price what we can get for our products and if...
I know, there are arguments for all of the prices. I just think that overcharging makes fresh eggs an elitist endeavor. The fact that the vendors prices fluctuate based on who is at market tells me the mark up is intentional and not a break-even analysis. The prices changing smells a lot like...

That's sad! Farm eggs are delicious, and $2 I consider a real bargain. I would even go up to $3 in our area. But NOT 5! However, these guys would be out of business if they weren't selling. So, I guess good for them. I just feel for those that need good produce and are cornered into...
